Discover Digoin: Canals, River Life and Ceramics
Accommodation in Digoin
Digoin brings together the Loire river landscape, canals, navigation and a rich ceramic heritage. If you are looking for a hotel in Digoin, the different sides of the town can help you plan your trip: water engineering and river scenery sit alongside exhibitions, crafts and church architecture. The canal bridge, waterways and ceramics each tell their own part of the town’s story.
Canals and structures around the Loire
The Pont-canal de Digoin is a 243-metre-long masonry bridge with eleven arches. It was built between 1832 and 1836 so that the Canal latéral à la Loire could cross the Loire. You can experience the structure on foot, by bicycle or in a pleasure boat. Its length and arches make the water engineering easy to appreciate; at the same time, the canal bridge represents the connection between canal and river that defines Digoin.
The canal route itself is also remarkable: in Digoin, the Canal du Centre and the Canal latéral à la Loire run together along a four-kilometre stretch between Le Paradis and Port Campionnet. The GUICHARD-CAMPIONNET marina can accommodate all kinds of river craft and can welcome 40 to 50 boats a day. In Digoin, you can encounter both the technical side of the waterways and river traffic.
From a glazed gallery at ObservaLoire, you can enjoy a panoramic view of more than 180 degrees over the canal bridge and the Loire. Binoculars are provided to observe the local flora and fauna. The exhibition rooms are devoted to the underwater world, the Marine de Loire, and the Loire and its canals; there is also a temporary exhibition room. This broadens the view from the structure and river landscape to life underwater and the history of navigation.
River experiences and routes
The Bateau Ville de Digoin offers guided cruises lasting one or one and a half hours. Topics include the canal bridge, lock operation, the history of the canals and inland waterway traffic, as well as local flora and fauna. Cruises are seasonal, so check the operator’s published timetable when planning your trip. Private trips on the Bateau Volnay offer a different focus: you can learn about canal manoeuvres and steering, pass through locks and cross the canal bridge, which stands more than twelve metres above the Loire. The choice therefore comes down mainly to the kind of experience you want: guided explanations on the one hand, and practical insights into boat handling on the other.
If you would like to explore the area on foot or by bicycle, the Dompierre-sur-Besbre–Diou–Digoin Green Route is a good option. It runs for just under 30 kilometres between the Loire and the Canal latéral à la Loire and ends at the Digoin lock, near a canal bridge. The Pont-Levis Digoin, one of the last surviving metal lift bridges, is also on a Green Route that can be used on foot or by bicycle. These routes offer further views of bridges and locks alongside the waterways.
Ceramics, crafts and architecture
The Manufacture de Digoin was founded in 1875 and makes everyday items for the garden and home. A bookable tour lets you follow the different stages of production, meet the craftspeople and discover a heritage passed down for more than 150 years. It is worth checking the current booking conditions when planning your visit.
The Musée de la Céramique de Digoin is housed in a building dating from 1742 and contains around 8,000 objects across 14 rooms. The tour spans a long period of history, from a Gallo-Roman kiln dating to the second century to ceramic production in Digoin since 1770 and the techniques used to make and decorate ceramics. The different historical periods highlight both the long history of ceramics and the craft methods involved.
The churches also offer distinctive architectural features. Construction of the Église Notre-Dame de la Providence began in 1869; the Romanesque-Byzantine church features sculpted tympanums on its façade, including scenes of the Wedding at Cana and the disciples at Emmaus. The Église Sainte-Bernadette is a significant work by architect Pierre Bernard and is notable for its innovative use of reinforced concrete.
As a seasonal event, “L'été à Digoin” adds to the town’s attractions: this annual summer programme includes performances, concerts, night markets and exhibitions. Dates and events vary, so checking the programme for the relevant year can help you plan when to visit.
