Montchanin can be explored through several themes: the history of the coalfield and industry, the Canal du Centre and its river tourism, and independent walking and cycling options. This offers different starting points for planning your trip—from architectural details to specific route information. The town’s railway connections may also play a role in your journey.

Industrial history and buildings

Montchanin lies at the heart of a major coalfield, which was mined by the Houillères de Montchanin from the 1820s until 1912. The Fonderie Henri-Paul provides another specific date: the Etablissements Schneider du Creusot began construction in June 1918, and the first casting took place on 19 June 1920. The cast-iron foundry comprises five bays. The bronze foundry and the storage and changing-room building each have three bays—a comparison that highlights the different parts of the complex.

The parish church also brings together architectural and local history. It was built in 1846–1847 by the Société des Houillères de Montchanin and became a parish church in 1854, when the commune of Montchanin-les-Mines was established. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and Belgian bricks were used as building material. The building’s history can therefore be read both in its period of construction and in its architecture.

The Cinéma Les Variétés was built in 1921 and opened on 24 September that year with 719 seats. Several richly decorated houses associated with the Grande Tuilerie de Bourgogne can also be seen in the station district. Together with the church and the Fonderie Henri-Paul, these buildings illustrate different aspects of Montchanin’s architectural and industrial history.

Canal du Centre and Bois-Brétoux port

The Canal du Centre offers river tourism in Montchanin. The canal also includes the stretch between Montchanin and Chagny, with its seven locks. The Bois-Brétoux port and landing stage comprise a quay, a house, a workshop, a side channel, a tugboat, a boat, and a crane. These features range from built structures and water areas to vessels and a crane.

Walking, nature, and cycling route

One walking route in Montchanin passes through the Marais du Pont des Morands, with a 1.5-kilometre educational trail for exploring the local wildlife and plant life. Another option is the “Sur les traces d’un passé entre terre et eau (MCH)” route: it is 16 kilometres long, rated moderate, and listed as taking four hours. The stated time is not guaranteed to be accurate today. The two options are therefore a short nature-themed educational trail and a considerably longer, moderate walk with a stated duration.

For cyclists, EuroVelo 6 includes a signposted section from Montchanin to Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune. The walks and the cycling section are different options; no travel or walking time is given for either. Check current route conditions before setting off, and bear in mind that the four-hour estimate for the 16-kilometre walk is not guaranteed to be accurate today.
