Montmelard combines architectural history with notable landscape features. The present-day and former churches, two châteaux and the Moulin de Vigousset reflect different historical periods. The GR7 passes through the village; at Mont Saint-Cyr, the summit elevation, panoramic views and a picnic area help orient visitors. When planning your trip, you can consider whether architectural history, a view across the region or a specific activity at the private fishing pond is your main priority.

Churches, Châteaux and a Mill

The present-day church in Montmelard was built from 1871 to 1873. The former church was Romanesque and remained standing until 1870. Romanesque refers to a medieval architectural style, whereas the years indicate a specific period of construction. The two details can therefore be read as different historical perspectives: one describes the former church’s architecture, while the other places construction of the present-day church in the late 19th century.

The châteaux add other dates to the picture. Château de Villars dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, while Château de Vigousset was restored in 1887. The date 1887 refers to the restoration, not the château’s construction; the details about the two buildings thus represent different historical events. The Moulin de Vigousset probably has its origins in the feudal period. Its history is connected with that of the neighbouring château. The local heritage therefore includes not only the individual buildings, but also their respective historical contexts and the connection between the mill and the château. The feudal period remains a tentative attribution for the mill’s origins.

Summit Views and the GR7

At 771 metres, Mont Saint-Cyr is the highest summit in southern Burgundy. From the summit, you can see across Charolais, Brionnais and Clunisois. These three names give the panorama a specific geographical context: the viewpoint is defined not only by its elevation, but also by the named landscapes. There is also a designated picnic area in the woods at Mont Saint-Cyr. The summit is open and freely accessible year-round; nevertheless, check current conditions before your visit.

The GR7 passes through Montmelard and connects the Vosges with the Pyrenees. It offers a different geographical perspective from Mont Saint-Cyr: while the summit opens up views across Charolais, Brionnais and Clunisois, the route places Montmelard on a connection between two mountain regions. The difference is also one of scale: a single summit compared with a route connecting Montmelard to distant mountain regions.

Fishing Pond and Fishing Permit

Étang de Millade is a private, ten-hectare fishing pond in Montmelard. Fishing is permitted with a fishing permit. When planning, take into account not only the size of the water but also the permit conditions and seasonal access; check both before your trip.
