Discover Montret: Church, Serrée and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Montret
Montret brings together architectural history, local events and an excellent cycling route. When planning your stay, different interests may shape your choice: the history of Saint-Loup Church, historical local connections around the Serrée, an event date or a bike ride. There are also clearly defined visiting conditions, such as the seasonal group tours at Ferme de Viennette, which are available by appointment only.
Church History and the Serrée
The present-day Saint-Loup Church in Montret was built in 1862. The former church stood near a spring on the descending bend in the road from the town centre towards Saint-Vincent and was demolished in the first half of the 19th century. This comparison places the building history in chronological context: the predecessor was demolished before the present church was built in 1862.
Montret lies on the Roman road from Chalon to Lons via Louhans. The Serrée also rises in Montret and formerly formed the boundary between the area governed by written law and the area governed by customary law. The Serrée therefore combines a local natural feature with a former legal boundary function; the Roman road points to a different historical context.
Events and Products from Montret
Several local events take place each year. These include flea markets and sporting events, as well as banquets, a fair, communal meals, tasting and sales events, and illuminations. The calendar ranges from sporting and market events to shared meals and festive occasions. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular flea market, sporting event or festival, check the date in advance, as event dates may change.
The Magasin de la Ferme in Montret offers seasonal agricultural and market garden produce, as well as dishes and other products made in its own workshop. Timing is therefore also relevant to your plans: the range is seasonal, and product availability and opening arrangements may change. Check the current selection and visiting hours before your visit.
From May to October, Ferme de Viennette offers groups tours of the farm by appointment. If you would like to include a tour in your stay, arrange the date in advance and take the seasonal availability into account.
Cycling Route and Transport
The permanent cycling route “A la découverte de la Bresse Bourguignonne” passes through the Montret area and is designated FFCT No. 165. Before setting off, check the route conditions and the related downloadable materials. The Route Européenne D'Artagnan also passes through the Montret area; its conditions may change, so it is advisable to check separately before planning.
Mobigo line 8 passes through Montret and connects Louhans with Chalon-sur-Saône. It previously operated under the name Buscéphale. Check the current timetable before travelling so your plans match your travel date.
Montret is also one of the municipalities served by the demand-responsive taxi service of Bresse Louhannaise Intercom'. Check operating days and booking requirements before using the service. While the Mobigo information identifies a line with two end points, the taxi service is demand-responsive; the two services are therefore organised differently.
