Discover Paray-Le-Monial: Basilica, Museums and Mosaics
Accommodation in Paray-Le-Monial
Paray-le-Monial offers several distinct reasons to stay: sacred architecture, museums devoted to art and industrial history, contemporary mosaic art, and cycling and walking routes. Before your trip, you can decide whether architectural history, a particular museum or outdoor activities should be the focus. The places and activities below give these themes specific names and details.
Basilica and Sacred Art
The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Paray-le-Monial was built in the 12th century by Hugues de Semur, Abbot of Cluny. It is considered one of the most significant examples of Cluniac architecture in Burgundy.
The Musée du Hiéron is France’s oldest museum of sacred art. The building is one of the few in France that was designed as a museum when it was constructed in the late 19th century. It is recognized as both a Monument historique and a Musée de France. The museum also displays a nearly 900-year-old Romanesque portal from Anzy-le-Duc.
These bring together two different periods: the 12th-century basilica and a building designed specifically as a museum in the late 19th century. If you are interested in sacred architecture and art, this comparison offers a glimpse into different eras and functions.
Industrial History at the Musée Paul Charnoz
The Musée Paul Charnoz is housed in a former porcelain stoneware tile factory and presents the different phases of the factory’s history. The production of porcelain stoneware tiles is also explained in an accessible way. The subject therefore encompasses both the history of the former factory and the manufacturing technique.
The works on display include two monumental tile panels decorated in pâte-sur-pâte, measuring 21.4 m² and 122 m² respectively. They received awards at the 1889 and 1900 World’s Fairs in Paris and are protected as historic monuments. Contemporary Mosaic Art
The Maison de la Mosaïque Contemporaine is an art centre dedicated to contemporary mosaic art, run by the M comme Mosaïque association. Since 2013, it has promoted the art form through exhibitions of international significance. The 2026–2027 programme includes intensive mosaic courses lasting 35 hours, led by renowned artists.
Exhibitions and courses offer different ways to engage with mosaic art. If you plan to take a course in the 2026–2027 programme, set aside 35 hours for it.
Cycling, Walking and the Canal du Centre
Paray-le-Monial lies on EuroVelo 6 and the cycling route to Roanne. There are three walking routes, each less than 10 km long. If you are looking for a shorter walk, this distance may help you choose; for cyclists, EuroVelo 6 and the route to Roanne are the named route options.
The Canal du Centre also shapes the town’s geographical setting: the canal is 112 km long, runs through Paray-le-Monial and connects the Loire and Saône rivers. Alongside the two cycling routes and the shorter walks, it offers a waterway with a clearly described link between the rivers.
Garden and Scavenger Hunt
The Jardin Saint-Hugues has 500 roses, adding a garden theme to the historic buildings and museums.
Mission Fil d'Or is a family-friendly scavenger hunt through the streets of Paray-le-Monial, where participants discover the town’s monuments. Unlike the museum visits, this activity takes you through the streets. Check locally to find out whether it is currently available.
