Saint-Léger-Lès-Paray can be discovered from several angles: a signposted circular trail leads through the village and its countryside, while the GRETT shares craft, music and dance traditions. There are also historical traces that tell of former village centres and ecclesiastical history. For planning your trip, the village therefore offers both a specific route for active outings and cultural themes to explore in greater depth.

The Balade Verte on foot or by mountain bike

The Balade Verte – En terre Lesdégarienne (PLM4) is an easy, eight-kilometre circular route. It starts and ends at the picnic area or car park by the boulodrome in Saint-Léger-lès-Paray and is signposted. The route is suitable for walkers, mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes. Its length, difficulty rating and circular layout give you a clear basis for deciding whether this tour fits your plans.

Along the way, the trail passes through the centre of Saint-Léger-lès-Paray, follows the Oudrache and crosses bocage countryside. The village and the landscape are therefore part of the same route: you pass through the village centre, follow the river and then experience the bocage areas shaped by hedgerows and fields. This sequence makes the Balade Verte more than just a distance on a map; it gives the tour a variety of landscape and village points of interest.

Whether you plan to walk or ride a mountain bike, decide based on the listed activity types and your own plans. Check the route information again before setting off. Allow time according to your own pace and the day’s other plans.

Crafts, music and dance with the GRETT

The GRETT was founded in 1984 as the Groupe de Recherche, d’Étude et de Transmission des Traditions du Charolais Brionnais. Its name identifies research, study and the transmission of Charolais Brionnais traditions as its areas of focus. Alongside the route through the countryside, the sharing of regional traditions is another cultural point of interest in Saint-Léger-Lès-Paray.

At GRETT workshops, you can learn to work with willow, straw, hazel and wool. The programme thus introduces several specific materials through which traditional crafts can be experienced. The traditions shared by the GRETT also include learning traditional melodies and dancing bourrées. Crafts, music and dance offer different ways to engage with the traditions brought together under the group’s name.

If you would like to include a workshop in your travel plans, check the dates in advance. The combination of craft activities, melodies and dance is nevertheless a clear cultural focus to consider alongside the tour.

Historical traces in Saint-Léger

The hamlet of La Cure was the historic centre of Saint-Léger and had a church and a cemetery. Remains of the former church have been preserved in a residential building.

A surviving bell also points to the former church: in 1812, it was reinstalled in the bell tower of the church in Vigny. Its historical connection today is therefore in Vigny, not at its original location in Saint-Léger. This distinguishes it from the remains preserved in the residential building and places two traces of the same church history in different locations.

A record relating to the Vieux Château takes us further back in time. In a letter dated 1386, Robert de l’Espinace, Lord of Saint-Léger, declared that he held the Maison forte de Santo Lesdegaris as a fief from Bernard d’Armagnac, Count of Charollais.

Two focuses for planning your trip

When planning your trip, you can choose between outdoor activity on a clearly defined route and cultural themes centred on crafts, music, dance and local history. The Balade Verte offers the practical details of a signposted, eight-kilometre circular route; the GRETT and the historical accounts offer a different focus. This lets you choose Saint-Léger-Lès-Paray based on what matters to you during your stay, without combining the route and cultural history into a single programme.
