Saint-Point: Church, Routes and Lake
Accommodation in Saint-Point
Saint-Point offers different focal points for planning your trip: architectural history, rural culture, routes and Lac Saint Point Lamartine. Consider whether you would like to include a historic landmark, a route or time by the lake in your stay.
Church, Fresco and Cultural Venues
Saint-Point church is located outside the château grounds, along the perimeter wall. It is freely accessible year-round; check on site whether access conditions remain unchanged for your visit. Its Romanesque features include the choir, transept, the last three bays of the nave and the bell tower. These parts date from around 1100. The bays divide the nave into sections; the choir and transept refer to other parts of the church building. The apse contains a 15th-century fresco of Christ in Majesty. This means that Romanesque elements and later medieval painted decoration stand side by side in one building.
Saint-Point is also connected to the Route des Châteaux en Bourgogne du Sud, which includes fourteen châteaux. This offers a different perspective on architectural history from focusing on the individual church: here, one specific building, with its Romanesque features and fresco, is set against a route featuring several châteaux.
La Pimenterie is a versatile cultural and social venue in rural Saint-Point. Le P’tit Pim, a children’s festival, is associated with La Pimenterie. This cultural meeting place adds to the historic themes of the village. If you are planning your trip around your interests, you can distinguish the church and its architectural history from La Pimenterie’s cultural and social character; the festival is explicitly aimed at a young audience.
Routes through Saint-Point
The waymarked Circuit des croix is about 15 kilometres long and passes through almost all of Saint-Point’s hamlets. It runs along both sides of the Valouzin Valley. You can follow the route on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. Its length, valley route and the listed ways of getting around offer different considerations for planning your route, without limiting the trail to just one activity.
The GR76 also crosses Saint-Point. The pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela and Assisi follow the GR76 here. The routes therefore have different points of interest: the Circuit des croix is characterised by its hamlets, the two sides of the valley and the different ways of getting around, while the GR76 is also linked to the two pilgrimage routes mentioned.
At Lac Saint Point Lamartine
Swimming is possible at Lac Saint Point Lamartine. Local swimming conditions may vary, so check them before your visit. The lake is set in a protected environment. There is also a picnic area and parking at the site; check before travelling whether these facilities will be available during your visit. Swimming, picnicking and parking are practical points to consider if you would like to include the lake in your travel plans.
First, choose the theme that matters most for your stay, and use it to guide the rest of your planning.
