Discover Sornay
Accommodation in Sornay
Sornay is bordered by the Sâne Morte and the Seille. Riverside landscapes, walking trails, a heritage orchard and the Château de Lusigny showcase different sides of the area. When planning your trip, you can choose between nature, specific routes and cultural points of interest.
Riverside landscapes and walks
The Grande Seugnière oxbow lies on the left bank of the Seille, opposite the centre of Sornay, and is a former arm of the river. The hamlet of Lusigny, in the commune of Sornay, lies just upstream of the Seille. This gives you two ways to explore the area’s connection to the river: the former arm opposite the town centre and the hamlet’s location upstream.
The Coupures de Sornay are a 4-hectare former river arm in Sornay. Fishing at the Coupures is permitted for members of the AAPPMA in SaĂ´ne-et-Loire and for anglers with a fishing licence bearing one of the CHI, EHGO or URNE vignettes. The current fishing regulations apply. If fishing is important to your trip, check that you are eligible under the applicable regulations.
The 15 km “Randonnée du bocage sornaysien” walk passes through the Bresse Bocage and is rated very easy. Its length and difficulty rating offer two different points of reference when choosing a route: you can first consider the distance and then take the rating into account.
On the SO2 walk, you can admire some old Bresse farmhouses with half-timbering. Along the “Randonnée du bocage sornaysien,” you can discover some Bresse farmhouses and market gardens. The focus differs: half-timbering is a particular feature of the SO2, while the Randonnée also takes in market gardening. You can choose the route according to the things that interest you most.
Orchard and village life
Sornay’s heritage orchard was inaugurated in October 2015 and is home to numerous local and heritage fruit varieties. Other features include two educational ponds and two insect hotels. Heritage fruit varieties and biodiversity features offer different ways to explore the garden.
Thanks to collaboration with the Croqueurs de pommes and Pépinières de Bresse, events are regularly held in the orchard. If you would like to include an event in your travel plans, check the current dates in advance.
Sornay is a village of market gardeners and horticulturists. A market is held in Sornay on Saturday mornings. The market day gives you a concrete point of reference for planning your week; check the current schedule before your trip.
Château and services
Today, the Château de Lusigny is a place for meeting, humanist exchange, and reflection and the sharing of knowledge and expertise. A chapel stands beside the château and dates back, at least in part, to the Middle Ages. If you would like to attend, check before your trip whether it is open to the public.
According to the schedule listed for 2026, services are held at the Protestant Temple on Route du Temple at 11:00 a.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Check the current schedule before your visit.
