Tramayes: Walking Trails, Panoramas and Architectural History
Accommodation in Tramayes
Tramayes brings together marked trails, viewpoints and architectural history, offering a range of experiences during your stay. When looking for a hotel for your trip, you can decide in advance whether you want to focus on hiking, landscape panoramas or historic architecture. The trails vary in destination and activity; the historic buildings offer further insights into the history of the town.
Walking Trails and Panoramas
The marked “Balades Vertes” trails make it possible to discover the local landscapes and heritage. The trail network leads to Signal de la Mère Boîtier, at 758 metres, one of the highest points in the Mâconnais. The 360-degree panorama takes in the Alps, the Jura, the Saône plain, and the Monts du Mâconnais, Charolais and Beaujolais. From the orientation table at the signal, the view stretches across the Bresse, Beaujolais and Monts du Mâconnais. The path to the table is relatively steep; bear this section in mind when planning your visit to the viewpoint.
The GR76, known locally as the “Chemin des Moines”, is used by the Way of St James and the Way of St Francis. The Tour de Vannas circuit is suitable for both hiking and mountain biking. It passes remote farms and pastures where sheep or cattle graze, and offers views of the Grosne Valley and the mountains of Charolais, Mâconnais and Beaujolais. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The La Mère Boitier footpath is marked by intricately carved stone crosses. The Circuit des Sources is a circular walking route on which you can discover the village of Tramayes. For a change of scenery, the “À la découverte des paysages viticoles: de Tramayes à Mâcon” route passes through vineyards and offers panoramic views of the Saône Valley. The routes thus focus on stone crosses, exploring the village, or vineyard landscapes with valley panoramas.
The Site de vol libre de Champvent on the Massif de la Mère Boitier is set up for paragliding. The site offers views across the Val Lamartinien. Check flying conditions and access before use.
Architectural History and Heritage
The Château de Tramayes has been listed as a historic monument since 14 March 1977 and is privately owned. If you are considering a visit, check accessibility in advance.
The Church of Saint John the Baptist reveals another aspect of the area’s architectural history. It is Romanesque in style and was rebuilt in the 19th century. The tall bell tower, which is protected as a historic monument and now serves as a tower porch, and the former Romanesque choir bay have been preserved. Columns and pilasters form a decorative composition. The combination is particularly interesting from an architectural perspective: the 19th-century rebuilding stands alongside preserved Romanesque elements, so the building’s history spans more than one construction phase.
