Trails, views and climbing routes
Numerous marked hiking trails around La Roche lead to various viewpoints across the landscape. From the summit of Roche de Vergisson, you can see the village and the vineyards below, Roche de Solutré opposite, and the Beaujolais mountains in the distance. The view extends from the immediate village and vineyard landscape to the distinctive landforms on the horizon. There are also numerous varied trails through vineyards and forests, with different levels of technical difficulty. Use marked trails. For planning your excursions, you can choose between two different perspectives: the viewpoints on the hiking trails around La Roche and the varying technical difficulty of the trails through vineyards and forests.
Vergisson has climbing routes of all difficulty levels at two locations: La Roche and Le Parvis. The climbing area at Roche de Vergisson includes grades 4 to 8a. Restrictions may apply in protected areas; take this possibility into account when planning. Paragliding is also possible in Vergisson, but is intended for experienced people. Expert safety guidance is required.
Traces of different eras
Neanderthals lived in several caves at Roche de Vergisson during the Mousterian period. In the western part of Vergisson, people found sandstone at the end of the Stone Age to build dolmens and menhirs. These include a menhir in the hamlet of Chancerons, erected in the early 19th century. These traces represent different periods: the cave dwellings date to the Mousterian period, the search for building material to the end of the Stone Age, and the erection of the menhir to the early 19th century. The local history therefore cannot be reduced to a single era.
Pouilly-Fuissé and tastings
Vergisson is one of the four villages in the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation where only white Chardonnay wines are produced. The other villages are Chaintré, Fuissé and Solutré-Pouilly. The area’s connection to wine is therefore not just a general feature of the landscape, but part of a precisely named appellation and its four villages. Domaine Carrette offers tastings and direct sales at its cellar at the foot of Roche de Vergisson, by prior arrangement only.
