Jussy brings together the Église Notre-Dame and the winegrowers’ houses on the Grande Rue with vineyards, orchards and paths through the hilly countryside. This gives you two main ways to plan your trip: explore the village’s cultural history and hike through the countryside around Jussy. If you’re looking for a hotel in Jussy, you can first decide whether you’d like to focus your stay on village history, nature or both.

Church, History and the Grande Rue

The Église Notre-Dame has been protected as a historic monument under a decree dated 16 February 2012. It retains a nave dating from the 12th century, as well as part of its wooden structure. Inside are a polychrome wooden Christ, a seated Burgundian Madonna and a Saint Anne. The church thus brings together several distinct historical and artistic details.

During the Wars of Religion, most of Jussy was burned down; the church and a few houses escaped the fire. On the Grande Rue, you can see winegrowers’ houses, often with round-arched doorways and cellar entrances. Alongside the church, these houses reveal another historical aspect of the village: architecture connected with winegrowing.

Walking in Jussy

If you’re planning a hike, you can compare two circular routes in Jussy by length and duration. Circular Route No. 25, “devant la ville,” starts in Jussy, is 7.2 kilometres long and takes two hours. It offers a view of the village and its church with its protected balustrade. Circular Route No. 26, “du Tourbenay,” also starts in Jussy, is five kilometres long and takes one hour and 15 minutes. It is therefore 2.2 kilometres shorter and takes 45 minutes less than Route No. 25.

The Source de Tourbenay flows year-round along the route starting from Jussy. The Bois de la Garenne lies along a walking trail starting from Jussy; depending on the season, you can find lily of the valley or wild asparagus there.

The La randonnée des trois clochers hike passes through the winegrowing villages of Escolives-Sainte-Camille, Jussy and Coulanges-la-Vineuse. It can be done year-round and is suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding. As local trail conditions may change, it’s best to check them before setting out.

Vineyards, Orchards and Countryside

Jussy is known for wine and fruit growing, and its slopes are covered with vineyards and orchards. During cherry blossom season, the area becomes a seasonal landscape of blossoms. The village scenery thus includes both cultivated land and a natural display that appears at a particular time of year.

Around Jussy, the soils are made up of clay and limestone and are rich in marine fossils, evidence of an earlier marine environment. The present-day landscape is thus linked to a much older natural history.
