Tanlay: Renaissance Château, canal park and golf
Accommodation in Tanlay
Tanlay combines an outstanding Renaissance château with a canal park and a range of leisure activities. This gives you several distinct options when planning your trip: culture at the Domaine, golf, waymarked routes, or activities on and by the water. Practical arrangements vary. The château interior is accessible only on scheduled guided tours; check the current operating status of facilities at Base de Loisirs l’Haliotis before you travel. Which of these themes matters to you can guide your choice of a hotel in Tanlay.
Château de Tanlay and its Domaine
The historic Château de Tanlay is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Burgundy. It is part of the Route des Ducs cultural route. The Domaine includes the château and the Petit Château, the outbuildings, the Chapelle Saint-Emilian, moats and drawbridges, as well as the Cour Verte and the walls surrounding it. The park is also part of the estate: its features include a canal, vista, bridges, a mill and an entrance gate. The Parc du Château is laid out around a large canal that ends at a Renaissance nymphaeum. The Domaine therefore encompasses not only the château buildings but also courtyards, water features and parkland.
The château interior can be visited only as part of scheduled guided tours. If you want to see the interiors, check the current tour schedule before you travel and plan accordingly.
Golf by the canal
The public Golf du Château de Tanlay course is located by the canal in the château park. It has a 9-hole course and a practice area; it was designed by Antoine d’Ormesson. The course runs alongside the canal and its vista. The canal is therefore a recurring feature of the design: it shapes the park and also runs alongside the golf course. As operating facilities may change, check the latest information before planning a round.
Waymarked routes and outings on the water
Tanlay’s permanent, waymarked Rando-Trail offers two routes: 16 and 29 kilometres, both starting in the village of Tanlay. The two distances give you a clear choice of tour length; you should still check route conditions locally. Another route, “Tanlay et son château”, follows the towpath along the canal to the lock at Moulin de Saint-Vinnemer. The two routes offer different points of reference: on one, you choose between two distances; on the other, the path follows the canal to the named lock.
Boat trips lasting between one and one and a half hours have been listed at Base de Loisirs l’Haliotis; a reopening was announced for 2026. During the 2025 season, bicycles and Rosalies were among the facilities on offer, allowing visitors to follow the canal from Tanlay. Check whether these activities are currently available before you travel.
The information answers different planning questions: the Rando-Trail focuses on route distance, while a boat trip is described by its duration. This lets you compare a walk by kilometres and an outing on the water by time.
