Discover Colombiers: Culture, Architecture and Activities
Accommodation in Colombiers
Colombiers offers several points of interest to consider when planning your trip: the history of the Château de la Salle, a historic canal structure, hiking routes and karting. If you’re looking for hotels in Colombiers, you might first consider whether you’re most interested in heritage, a route with a stated duration or a leisure activity. These different themes can be matched to the purpose of your trip without requiring you to choose just one.
Château History and Historic Structures
The history of the Château de la Salle spans several phases of construction. Its existence is documented from the 14th century. In the 15th century, the château acquired its present appearance; it was restored in the second half of the 17th century. The protection of certain features is a separate matter: the protected historic features are the façades and roofs, the fireplaces in the salon and dining room dating from the 15th century, and the entrance portal. The château was listed by decree dated 10 December 1987. Its development and protected status therefore belong to different periods: the restoration took place in the second half of the 17th century, while the decree dates from 1987.
The Pont-canal de la Tranchasse has a different story. It was built between 1829 and 1834, following a project proposed by the engineer Vauvilliers on 22 August 1822. The bridge crosses the Cher between Colombiers and Ainay-le-Vieil. Its dimensions and design are also specified: it is 96 metres long and has eight shallow arches. The dates help distinguish the project proposal from the subsequent construction period; its length and arches also provide concrete points of reference for understanding the canal structure.
Gallo-Roman history is another part of Colombiers’ heritage, including visible remains of the aqueduct from Meslon to Drevant. Together, the château’s history and the Pont-canal offer a range of historical perspectives, from Gallo-Roman traces and the development of a château to the construction of a canal structure in the 19th century.
Hiking and Mountain Biking Routes
The “14 – Boucle de la Tranchasse” route pairs each activity with its own duration: it is listed as an easy hiking route taking 1 hour 50 minutes, and as a mountain biking route taking 45 minutes. The shorter duration therefore applies to mountain biking, not to a second walking time. When planning, consider the duration that matches your intended activity rather than treating the two times as interchangeable.
The “La plaine de Malvault à Colombiers” route starts in front of Église Saint-Martin and is marked with yellow waymarkers. The markings may change, so check them before setting out. The two route descriptions focus on different planning details: the Boucle lists the activity and duration, while the Malvault route specifies the starting point and waymarking.
Karting as Another Activity
Sport Colombiers Saint-Amand Karting has 17 recreational karts for introductory karting sessions and mini-races for amateur groups. It also has a training track for licensed drivers and an FFSA competition track. The facility described therefore includes both leisure activities for amateur groups and tracks intended for training or competition. Facilities and activities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
When choosing what to do, bear in mind that the historic buildings and traces of the past appeal to a different kind of travel interest than a route with a stated duration or karting. You can decide which of these themes is most important to your trip planning, then look for hotels in Colombiers that suit your accommodation needs.
