Culan: Heritage and trails along the Arnon
Accommodation in Culan
The Arnon Valley shapes the landscape around Culan. The town brings together buildings from different centuries, walking trails and regional history. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Culan, the focus of your trip can guide your choice: architectural history, walking routes or local culture each offer a different perspective.
Culan and its architectural history
Culan also has historical ties to the Route Jacques Cœur. It was established in 1954 at the initiative of three property owners, including Jean Ferragut from Culan. Château de Culan stands on a rocky outcrop above the Arnon Valley and dates from the 13th century. Its surviving features include massive towers, wooden hoardings made of chestnut and crenellated defensive walls from the 15th century.
The Viaduc de Culan belongs to another period in the town’s history: it was built at the end of the 19th century for the Montluçon–Châteauroux railway line. Its 13 arches rise more than 50 metres above the Arnon. The stone Pont “Romain” can also be dated: its oldest arches date from the 17th century. The name therefore does not refer to when it was built. The Church of Notre-Dame-de-Saint-Vincent dates back to the 12th century and was originally built as a castle chapel.
The former Tuilerie de Culan tells another part of the town’s history. Roof tiles and bricks made from fired clay were produced there. The kiln has been restored, and the site has been transformed into a recreational area with a playground and picnic tables.
Hiking and exploring Culan on foot
The marked walking trails starting from Culan pass through woods, follow rivers, cross fields and lead to small rural heritage sites. The “Les rives de l'Arnon” loop is described as an easy 11-kilometre walk with an estimated duration of three hours. On this route, you cross a footbridge over the Arnon; it also follows the former SNCF railway line.
For a different time commitment, the tourist office offers a self-guided tour of local heritage lasting around 1.5 hours. This gives you two options of different lengths: a shorter heritage-focused tour and a three-hour loop walk. The information can help you plan how to spend your time during your stay.
Activities and local life
Bungee jumping is offered from the top of the Viaduc de Culan, more than 50 metres above the Arnon, with professional supervision. The activity may be seasonal, so check availability before your trip. Benoit Pascaud’s lithography studio offers lithography courses, guided tours and an exhibition space. Check the programme before visiting.
The market is also part of local life: until 31 December 2026, it takes place on Tuesday and Friday mornings at Place du Champ de Foire, with stalls run by local producers. Check the dates before your trip. You can choose between architectural history, walks, the studio programme and a visit to the market according to the things that interest you in Culan.
