Jars brings together buildings from different periods of the village’s history and trails through the commune. The church of Saint-Aignan is an example of religious Renaissance architecture; the former weaver’s house with its mill and the pyramidal barn reflect weaving and rural building traditions. Walking and riding trails cross the entire commune. During your stay, you can choose to focus on heritage, outdoor activities, or a combination of the two. The Bois de la Passe circular trail offers a choice of two distances, with views over the Sauldre Valley and the village centre of Jars.

The church and the history of weaving

The church of Saint-Aignan in Jars is essentially a 16th-century building and is one of the few religious Renaissance buildings in the Cher département. Locally, it is called the “little cathedral of the Pays Fort”; this nickname is a description, not a formal architectural classification. For travellers interested in church architecture, it combines a regional landmark with a specific historical period.

The former weaver’s house, including its associated mill, was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 19 September 1966. Looms once stood in the stone cellar of the former weaver’s house. The mill is part of the listed property, while the looms point to the cellar’s former use. Together, these details illustrate different aspects of the village’s history: the architectural relationship between the house and the mill, and the former weaving activity.

The pyramidal barn

The pyramidal barn in Jars retains most of its original features. Its large roof rests on a timber frame supported by posts. The structure includes a central threshing floor, a sheepfold, feed troughs and storage areas above. This combination draws attention not only to the roof’s shape but also to the building’s agricultural functions: working space, animal housing and storage all come together here. The barn is part of a rural building tradition unique in France, found in the Pays Fort in the north of the Cher département. It remains open to visitors; check access before your visit.
