Thaumiers brings together architectural history and agricultural themes. The Église Saint-Saturnin and the Château de la Forêt reflect different architectural periods; Les Jardins d’Escofine represents vegetable growing and local produce. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Thaumiers, these highlights can help you decide what to include in your stay. When planning, both the different architectural forms and the timing of individual visitor activities are therefore relevant.

Église Saint-Saturnin: Design and Details

The Église Saint-Saturnin has been protected as a historic monument since June 2, 1911. Its original single-nave layout dates to the beginning of the 12th century. Two periods are therefore represented side by side: the early origins of the floor plan and its later protected status, granted in 1911.

The church’s south porch features a triple archivolt, above which is a cornice with carved modillions. An archivolt is a moulding that follows the curve of an arch; modillions are projecting carved brackets on a cornice. The details span two scales: the single-nave floor plan describes the building as a whole, while the archivolt and modillions are individual features of the south porch.

Château de la Forêt: Moat and Vault

The present-day Château de la Forêt dates from the 15th century and is privately owned. The southern moat remains; the former chapel has a rib vault.

In a rib vault, intersecting ribs structure the vault surface. The Château therefore offers several distinct architectural features: the surviving southern moat as an external structure and the vaulting of the former chapel. Together with the church, it provides a comparison between two different periods: the original church building dates back to the beginning of the 12th century, while the present-day Château dates from the 15th century.

Agriculture and Local Produce

Les Jardins d’Escofine is an organic vegetable farm in Thaumiers that uses cultivation methods focused on living soil. The farm is located in the leafy grounds of the Château de la Forêt estate. Visitors can meet the producers and take home fresh local produce; visits are by appointment. Here, the cultivation methods go hand in hand with the opportunity to take home produce from the region.

For the educational farm « Élevage des Galipettes » in Les Chartons, Thaumiers, a 2023 tourism map lists a farm visit and pony rides. Check before your trip whether these activities are still available. This distinguishes this time-sensitive visitor information from an appointment-based visit to Les Jardins d’Escofine.

June Event

The municipality’s events calendar lists the Fête de la Saint-Martin in June, with a parish fair, flea market, and country meal. If you wish to plan your trip around it, confirm the date for the year of your visit before making plans.
