Villegenon can be explored through several specific themes: church architecture and historical traces sit alongside natural habitats and described routes. If you are looking for a hotel to help plan your trip, these highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests. Would you like to focus on local history, consider nature-related topics, or include a walking or cycling route in your plans?

Church architecture and history

The Church of Saint-Georges has a rectangular floor plan, a flat-ended chancel and two side aisles. The floor plan describes the overall shape, while the chancel end is the end of the chancel; the side aisles extend the church space on either side. Prunesac Priory was founded in 1130.

The Calvaire Saint-Christophe was built in the 1950s. Its base incorporates a crankshaft, a valve, a piston and a cylinder liner. These components give the monument a specific connection to automotive engineering.

A festival dedicated to Saint Christopher had been held in Villegenon for a long time; the blessing of automobiles began there in the 1930s. Older traces have also been identified: during the Neolithic period, worked and polished flint was used as currency in Villegenon. Building remains on the banks of the Nère and the Croslaie point to a Gallo-Roman presence. The historical themes thus range from prehistory and the Gallo-Roman period to medieval and more recent evidence.

Natural habitats

The Natura 2000 site FR2400518 – Massifs forestiers et rivières du Pays-Fort covers 3,104 hectares. It includes alluvial forests and acidophilous Atlantic beech forests, whose undergrowth consists of holly and, in some places, yew. The protected area also includes streams that support populations of white-clawed crayfish and brook lamprey; these species are found especially in the River Layon.

One specific riverside habitat is the Aulnaie-Frênaie de Prunesac: it covers 10.1 hectares, lies on the banks of the Croulaie stream and is classed as a major ZNIEFF habitat.

Walking and cycling routes

The La Boucle des Silex walking route passes through bocage landscapes and detours past numerous ponds. An important practical point is the Château park: the route runs alongside it, but the park is private property and visitors are not allowed to enter. Take this access restriction into account when planning your walk.

The 2025 cycling guide lists the Paysages du Pays-Fort route; it runs from La Balance via Jars and Villegenon to Vailly-sur-Sauldre. The route may change in later editions. The routes differ both in their mode of travel and in the course described: landscapes and ponds shape the walking route, while named places define the cycling route.

Places to eat

If you would also like to include a place to eat in your travel plans: the La Récréation Gourmande restaurant in Villegenon serves homemade dishes made with fresh produce.
