Brezolles: History and Rural Landscapes
Accommodation in Brezolles
Brezolles lies on a rural plateau shaped by cereal farming in the northwest of the Eure-et-Loir department. The Beauce extends this far; the Perche lies to the southwest, and Normandy is nearby to the northwest. This location gives the town a regional setting with clearly defined compass directions. When planning your trip, you can consider its rural character, local history and activities as distinct aspects of your stay.
Church, Town Gates and Local History
Saint-Nicolas Church was founded in the early 11th century. After a fire in 1151, it was rebuilt in 1177; the building was altered in the 15th and 16th centuries. The bell tower and the first bay of the nave are partially classified as historic monuments; this classification dates from November 15, 1913. The nave is the long main part of the church building, and a bay is one section of it. The classification therefore specifies particular architectural elements rather than covering the church as a whole.
The church thus tells of a building history with several distinct phases; at the gate, it is chiefly one architectural feature that can be traced. These offer two different ways to explore local history: the development of a building and the trace of a former gate structure, which can be located at a specific address.
The former Porte de Tillières can be traced at 2, rue de Tillières by the Grison base of its turret. Some surrounding structures are privately owned. Brezolles was also a junction for two major Roman roads: the Paris–Mortagne route and the Chartres–Condé-sur-Iton route. The town’s history thus connects an architectural detail with a historic transportation role.
The Maladrerie de Brezolles dates back to the founding period of the military Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus in 1120. It served to house and care for people with leprosy; its former buildings stood outside the fortified town. Alongside architectural and transportation history, this site also reflects the former role of a care institution.
Market, Events and Paths by the Étang
Brezolles’ weekly market is held every Thursday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. under the market hall. If you plan to visit the market, confirm the date locally before travelling. Various cultural and other events are regularly held at the Grenier à sel; check the municipal events calendar for specific dates. The market therefore has a clear weekly schedule, while individual events should be planned around the calendar.
The Étang de Brezolles is laid out for walks. The fishing stretch on the Meuvette offers another way to enjoy the water: the AAPPMA Brezolles “L’Hameçon Brezollien,” founded in 1954, manages a short stretch from the Étang de Brezolles to Revercourt. The association’s activities include a fishing festival in June; the programme may change. Access for fishing and the regulations may also change, so check the current conditions before fishing.
