Indre-et-Loire offers several ways to explore the history and landscapes of the Loire Valley: fortified towns, châteaux, gardens and cultural collections each provide a different focus. When choosing a hotel, your travel plans may be the deciding factor – would you mainly like to explore historic sites, cycle, or spend time on hiking trails? The priorities you choose also influence which location is best suited as a base for your trip.

Loire Valley cultural landscape and history

The Val de Loire UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches from Sully-sur-Loire to Chalonnes-sur-Loire and recognizes a cultural landscape along the Loire. The Loire Valley cultural landscape reflects more than two thousand years of interaction between people and their environment. Chinon and Tours are among the Loire Valley’s historic towns; châteaux and other monuments reflect the ideals of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment.

Fortresses, châteaux and their stories

At the Forteresse royale de Chinon, immersive visits with augmented reality combine exploring the site with digital insights. Furnished reconstructions bring medieval history to life; a life-size escape game is also available. The interactive trail is about two kilometers long. Six terminals explain the panoramas and visible buildings, and the trail ends on the banks of the Vienne. One section is temporarily closed for safety reasons; check the route information before your visit.

The fortified Cité royale de Loches is dominated by a keep and a royal residence. In the keep, a HistoPad offers an augmented reality visit. The Château de Chenonceau offers a different perspective on history and architecture: its architecture overlooks the Cher and was inspired by the Ponte Vecchio. A nearly unbroken succession of women shaped the château’s history – they built, embellished, protected, restored and saved it. The château houses an exceptional collection of furniture, tapestries and paintings.

Literature enthusiasts will find another point of interest at the Château de Saché, which Honoré de Balzac regularly visited in the Touraine. The Hôtel Goüin houses an artists’ residency and the Artothèque de Touraine. These two places offer different ways to engage with culture: Balzac’s stays at the former, and an artists’ residency and art library at the latter.

Gardens, wine and trails

The Château de Villandry was completed around 1536. Its seasonal gardens feature flowers, medicinal plants and vegetables. Those interested in garden design will find a different focus here than at the fortified sites of Chinon and Loches: the emphasis is on the design and the different planting areas.

Wine and cycling also add their own character to a trip. Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire produce dry and medium-dry wines, as well as sparkling wines made from Chenin blanc. The Touraine has nearly 90 tourist wine cellars. The Savonnières–Villandry section of La Loire à Vélo passes troglodyte villages and terraced vineyards. At La Chapelle-sur-Loire, you can cross the Loire for free in a traditional boat with the boatmen of Vents d’Galerne.

Nature and hiking

The Touraine has a dense network of more than 3,200 kilometers of rivers, streams and waterways. Indre-et-Loire also includes places rich in wildlife and plant life. Longer day hikes in the Touraine exceed ten kilometers and pass through woods and fields; the department has about 4,500 kilometers of trails.

The environmental program in Indre-et-Loire includes nature workshops, treasure hunts, plant identification and excursions. The number and schedule of annual activities may change. This means the range of themes extends from visits to historic sites and gardens to trails through woods and fields, as well as activities focused on nature and plant life.
