Issoudun offers visitors points of interest in art, local history, green spaces and cycling. Its distinctive features give each of these themes its own character.

Museum Collections and the History of Pharmacy

Since 2 August 2002, the Musée de l'Hospice Saint-Roch has held the designation “Musée de France” under French heritage law. Its collections cover more than 2,000 m² and are divided into four thematic areas: ancient sculpture, pharmacy, non-European art and contemporary art. The range thus extends from antiquity to the present day; alongside art, pharmacy and non-European art are featured as distinct areas. Visitors interested in more than one period or area of art will find a correspondingly broad range of themes here.

One specific link to pharmacy is the 17th-century apothecary’s room. It contains wood panelling and 379 faience vessels. Unlike the four broadly defined collection areas, this room brings together details in a single historic setting: its period, woodwork and faience give it a distinctive character.

Tour Blanche and Église Saint-Cyr

Tour Blanche offers a different focus. It is a medieval keep in the heart of Issoudun, with panoramic views over the town, Parc François-Mitterrand and the surrounding countryside. A contemporary presentation also evokes the history of the building. At Tour Blanche, medieval architecture, a modern interpretation and views of the town and countryside come together as distinct aspects.

Église Saint-Cyr is the only surviving one of Issoudun’s former churches and a valuable testament to local history. A specific work of art adds to this historical connection: Jean Boucher’s painting “Descente de Croix”, dating from 1625, is located above the entrance. While the museum brings together four thematic areas, the church draws attention to this single work and its precise location. This is a different kind of connection to art from the thematic breadth of the museum’s collections.

Green Spaces and Cycling Route

Parc Flore Brazier offers a focus on the landscape. It is a one-hectare, wooded former private garden acquired by the town in 2019. The park stretches from Allée de Frapesle to the Théols and is bounded by the two small tributaries, Tournemine and Vignole. In contrast to the buildings and collections, the wooded green space shapes its character. As a former private garden, the park also has a different history from the medieval and religious buildings.

The Boucle Honoré offers another option: this cycling route in Issoudun is 9.2 km long and suitable for all types of bicycles. Its length and suitability for all types of bicycles give you concrete details to consider when deciding whether to include cycling in your travel plans. Unlike the museum, church or keep, this option is a cycling route, allowing you to consider culture and cycling as different interests for your stay.

A Local Product

Issoudun also has a culinary connection: La Cognette makes terrines and prepared products. If, in addition to the museum, architectural history and green spaces, you are interested in local products, you can consider this producer as another point of interest. Product information may change.
