Levroux: Discover its medieval heritage
Accommodation in Levroux
Levroux is recognised as a Petite Cité de Caractère®. Its medieval heritage provides a clear cultural focus; you can also choose to spend your time on a guided town tour, a circular cycling route or fishing at the Étang des Orbidas. If you’re looking for a hotel in Levroux, this distinction can help you define the focus of your trip.
Medieval heritage in Levroux
The Porte de Champagne is a uniquely preserved example of Levroux’s medieval fortifications and an important example of 15th-century military architecture. Les Tours are the only surviving remains of Levroux Castle, built in the 15th century: an entrance châtelet with two round towers. The Porte evokes the town’s fortifications, while Les Tours relate to the castle and its entrance structure—two distinct themes in medieval architecture.
The Maison de Bois was built between 1492 and 1495. This specific construction period provides a more precise timeframe than the general 15th-century dating of the Porte and the castle. Another facet of the heritage is the Collégiale Saint-Sylvain: this large church is classified as a Monument historique and can be explored by visitors. The cultural themes described therefore range from fortification and castle architecture to a precisely dated building and a church with protected monument status.
Following its restoration, the Porte de Champagne was reopened to traffic in both directions. Traffic regulations may change; check the current rules when planning your journey.
Guided town tour and other activities
A guided town tour adds a different format to visits to individual buildings: it takes you on a circuit with stops through the medieval town and its medieval heritage. If you’d like to discover the history not just at individual sites but as part of a guided tour, this offers a distinct way to explore Levroux’s heritage. Individual buildings and the guided circuit each have a different focus.
The former Mégissiers district is home to artists’ studios that visitors can enter. Access to any particular studio may depend on the artist. If you’re planning a visit, check access arrangements in advance with the studio concerned.
There are five circular cycling routes around Levroux. The routes mentioned include Le coteau de la tour, Romsac, La vallée de la Céphons, and Les bois de Moulins et de Romsac. Availability and route markings may change; check the latest information before setting out.
The Étang des Orbidas is used for fishing. If fishing is part of your stay, check the local rules.
The options mainly differ in format: the guided town tour is a circuit with commentary and stops through the medieval town, the cycling routes are circular routes around Levroux, and the Étang des Orbidas is used for fishing. This lets you choose the focus of your stay—culture, exercise or fishing.
