Montierchaume: Saint-Maurice and cycling options
Accommodation in Montierchaume
Montierchaume combines Saint-Maurice Church with local cycling and walking options. When planning your trip, religious and architectural heritage are just as much in focus as outdoor activities. The church’s historical details range from a transfer in 1100 to dated architectural features and furnishings; outdoor options include different types of cycling, a Sunday walk, and a named route.
Saint-Maurice Church: History and Architecture
According to visitor information updated in March 2026, Saint-Maurice Church is open to everyone interested in the religious heritage of Berry. In 1100, Léodegaire, also known as Léger, the Archbishop of Bourges, transferred the church to Notre-Dame de Déols Abbey. Polychrome, or multicoloured, frescoes in the choir recall the parish’s monastic origins. The richly decorated capitals in the choir are copies of those in the Benedictine abbey of Notre-Dame de Déols. The historical references differ: the transfer and the copies of the capitals point to the abbey, while the frescoes recall the parish’s monastic origins. Check current access information before your visit.
The single-nave choir and the apse, closed off on three sides, date from the 12th century. The sacristy dates from the 13th century and is adorned with a wooden statue from the 15th century; the statue is listed as a historic monument. The choir and apse therefore share the same date, while the sacristy and statue represent two later periods. This makes it possible to distinguish the dates of the architectural features and furnishings.
Cycling and Walking
Road cycling rides start on Mondays and Thursdays at 2 p.m. at Place Raymond Couturier. Different speeds and distances cater to beginners as well as experienced cyclists. The specific meeting point and the two start days give you a clear time reference for planning.
Mountain biking is also part of Montierchaume’s cycling options. Along with the road cycling rides, this means two types of cycling are available, each with a different style of activity.
As part of the USM Marche activity, UFOLEP organises a walk in Montierchaume every Sunday. In the weekly schedule, this takes place on Sunday, while road cycling rides start at 2 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. This difference between a weekend event and weekday rides can make it easier to plan your stay. Check the recurring dates in advance, as they may change.
Route and Rest Stop
The Tour de Montierchaume par le Nord et Crevant route passes the apple trees at La Fleuranderie and runs alongside Bois de la Ronde. Route details may change; check them before setting out.
A picnic table is available in the plaine de jeux area. If you plan to take a break, this table is a useful, specific landmark. If necessary, check before your visit whether the table is available for your plans.
