Pruniers: Woodlands, Trails and Churches
Accommodation in Pruniers
Pruniers brings together natural attractions and a rich religious history. The Forêt de Chœurs-Bommiers, a botanical nature trail and numerous rural trails provide specific ways to explore the area’s natural surroundings. At the Église Saint-Martin, the focus is on architectural history and historic furnishings; the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Choeurs is associated with a recurring pilgrimage. You can therefore shape your stay around woodland nature, architecture or religious tradition.
Woodland nature and rural trails
The Forêt de Chœurs-Bommiers is designated a continental ZNIEFF type 2; the designation includes the municipality of Pruniers. The ecological inventory is dated June 11, 2025. The forest is known for its rich wildlife. The wildcat and black stork are found there; the black stork is considered to breed in the massif. These details give the natural area a distinct character, without promising that you will see any particular animal.
A 2.23 km botanical nature trail lies in the Forêt domaniale de Chœurs-Bommiers. Its length provides a practical planning guide for anyone considering a single themed trail. Pruniers also offers numerous rural trails for exploring nature. This means you can choose between a botanical nature trail and other routes, without reducing the options to a single path.
Churches, architecture and tradition
The Église Saint-Martin was rebuilt from 1869 onwards in the Romanesque-Gothic style. Its architectural features include a stone bell-tower porch and a nave with rib vaulting. Side chapels form a transept, and the church ends in a semicircular apse. These features make the church’s architecture a distinct subject for a visit, alongside its historic furnishings.
Preserved furnishings include a fragment of stained glass from the 13th century and a bell dated to around 1472. They are joined by a painting of Saint Martin, donated in 1808 and signed by Parmentier, as well as two mourning figures in the Burgundian style from 1450. The different dates and objects offer several points of reference for understanding the church’s furnishings. Individual and group tours of the Église Saint-Martin are available on request. If a guided tour is important to your visit, check availability in advance.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Choeurs has Romanesque origins. A pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin Mary takes place there on the Feast of the Assumption; it is a recurring religious tradition. While the focus at Saint-Martin is on its building phases and historic furnishings, the chapel’s character is shaped by its Romanesque origins and religious occasion. If you would like to plan your trip around the pilgrimage, include the feast day in your plans.
Nature event and getting there
“Oiseaux forestiers” is the title of a nature event in Pruniers. It explores the remarkable diversity of migratory and resident birds in the department’s state forests, as well as the relationship between biodiversity and forest management. Its scope therefore extends beyond individual species to include forest management. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the date with the organizer in advance.
The RD925 runs through Pruniers and provides quick access to the A20 (Châteauroux) and A71 (Saint-Amand-Montrond) motorways. This road connection is a practical reference point for planning your route. The nature trail, rural paths, church architecture and religious tradition offer different highlights to include in your stay according to your interests.
