Saint-Hilaire-sur-Benaize combines historic buildings with routes between the Benaize and the Anglin. This puts two specific themes at the forefront when planning your trip: the town’s architectural history and routes for hiking and cycling. One hiking route passes through a river and rocky landscape; there is also a greenway and a day route with variations.

Historic buildings

The Château de Céré is a former fortified feudal manor house that served to monitor the valley. The medieval building comprises a rectangular residential building with four cylindrical corner towers. Its articulated design combines the residential section with the fortifications, illustrating the manor house’s former defensive character. The château preserves 16th-century wall paintings in its oratory. The building and paintings thus point to different historical layers: the medieval complex and artistic decoration from the 16th century.

The Église paroissiale Saint-Hilaire offers a different historical connection. It was among the gifts made by Pierre II, Bishop of Poitiers, to the Benedictines of Saint-Savin. The oldest part of the church is the apse, which dates from the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century. This dating refers to the apse. In contrast to the château, the focus here is on the history of the gift and the dating of a specific part of the building.

Hiking between the Benaize and the Anglin

The “De la Benaize à l'Anglin n°59” hiking route starts at the church square in Saint-Hilaire-sur-Benaize. It is 12 km long, marked in yellow and listed as taking three hours. Check trail conditions before setting out. The route leaves the Benaize and leads to the Anglin, where the path runs between the river and limestone cliffs with rock shelters. The distance, trail markings and stated duration provide a specific basis for planning; the stretches between the river and cliffs shape the landscape experience.

The route also passes castles that evoke the Hundred Years’ War and the commune’s strategic location. This brings together landscape and historical connections on the same hike.

The “Entre Benaize et Anglin” day route passes through another sequence of landscape features: below Céré, the Benaize flows beneath dense vegetation; the path climbs to the hamlet of Fontigon, and later the river reappears in the centre of Saint-Hilaire. Variations make the day route suitable for a horse-drawn carriage, too.
