Discover Authon: Heritage and Rolling Countryside
Accommodation in Authon
Authon combines a hilly landscape with a rich architectural and cultural history. La Brenne, Le Rondy, La Glaise and the Danube flow between farmland and woodland. The abbey, church and Château du Fresne each offer a different historical perspective. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Authon, these themes can help you decide whether to focus on the countryside, architecture or history.
Countryside and Ponds
Authon once had a great many ponds; in some places, they were less than 200 metres apart. Pond habitats remain part of the local landscape today, attracting birds, bats and dragonflies. Together with the four waterways, they make water a recurring feature alongside fields, woods and hills. For nature lovers, this contrast offers a different perspective on Authon from its architectural history: here, the focus is on landscape features and their habitats rather than individual buildings.
A Neolithic polishing stone was discovered near the Danube. This find adds a link to the Neolithic period to the town’s history and shows that Authon also has an archaeological past. This early find can be considered alongside later architectural evidence to understand the area’s local history.
Abbey, Church and Château
The former Abbey of L’Étoile was founded in the 1130s by Geoffroy Grisegonelle, Count of Vendôme, and his wife Mathilde de Châteaudun. It belonged to the Premonstratensian Order. The abbey church has preserved its original west portal. The date of its founding and the surviving portal offer two specific points of reference for the history of this religious building: one tells of its origins, while the other is an architectural feature that remains to this day.
The present-day Église Saint-Hilaire was rebuilt between 1860 and 1885. It houses a bronze bell cast by Husson and Colin in 1808, which is protected as a historic monument. The history of this church therefore brings together its 19th-century rebuilding and a considerably earlier bell-casting date. Those interested in architectural history can compare these different dates within a single church complex.
The present-day Château du Fresne was built from 1766 onwards by architect Anatole Amoudru, based on the earlier manor house. The grounds include an extensive lawn, plantings of various tree and shrub species, an artificial pond, planted paths and an enclosed fruit and vegetable garden. Alongside the building’s history, the design of the grounds also comes into focus: the lawn, trees and shrubs, water, paths and garden are all distinct parts of the estate. While the abbey tells a story of religious architecture through its foundation and west portal, the château is linked to the history of an earlier manor house and its landscaped grounds.
