Mennetou-sur-Cher combines a medieval townscape with the Canal de Berry. The village was founded in the 13th century and grew thanks to its strategic location on a former trade route between Bourges and Tours. This gives you two different ways to plan your trip: you can explore the fortified town and its buildings, or combine your stay with the named cycle route along the canal. Its history is reflected in the remains of its fortifications, its houses and the drawbridge.

Buildings from Several Centuries

The Grange aux Dîmes is one of the oldest buildings in Mennetou-sur-Cher. It stands on foundations dating from the 11th century and is classified as Angevin Gothic. These details refer to two different aspects: the foundations point to the building’s construction history, while the style classification describes its architecture. The Église Saint-Urbain was built in the 13th century, and 15th-century half-timbered houses add to the historic townscape. These examples let you consider the town’s different historical periods side by side, rather than grouping them into a single building phase.

Fortifications and Drawbridge

The ruins of Mennetou-sur-Cher’s ramparts, gates and towers were classified as a historic monument by decree on 24 December 1913. Of the fortification’s original four square gates, the north, south and east gates remain; five round towers stand on the ramparts. These numbers distinguish the original fortification from the parts that have survived. The Canal de Berry also has a historic structure: the wooden drawbridge and its mechanism, along with the stone boundary markers that frame it, have been listed as historic monuments since 17 May 2013.

Plan Your Village Visit and Tours

The medieval village of Mennetou-sur-Cher is open to visitors free of charge all year round. Guided tours have their own conditions: torchlit tours are offered in summer by reservation. For a group tour, you can include a daytime or nighttime visit in your plans.
