Monthou-Sur-Cher: Wine, Heritage and River
Accommodation in Monthou-Sur-Cher
When choosing a hotel in Monthou-Sur-Cher, the activities you have planned can shape the focus of your stay: wine visits, architectural and local history, water or horse riding. The experiences vary in format. A wine cellar visit combines a tour and tasting, while other wine experiences include an introduction to winegrowing, a treasure hunt and excursions. Culture enthusiasts will find both protected buildings and archaeological traces; by the water, the focus is on historic uses and the specific conditions for fishing.
Wine visits with different focuses
At Domaine Sauvète, the experience includes guided insights into winegrowing and a treasure hunt. Excursions through the vineyards on electric scooters or gyropods are also offered. Domaine Desloges takes a different approach: a guided tour of the wine cellar explains the working methods and includes a wine tasting. This gives you a choice between an experience featuring winegrowing and vineyard excursions, and a cellar visit with explanations and a tasting. Both destinations connect your stay with wine, but through different activities.
Château, church and archaeological traces
Château du Gué-Péan is partially classified as a historic monument. Its façades, roofs and access bridge were protected by a decree dated 10 October 1980. The château can be reached by car or bicycle from the centre of Monthou-Sur-Cher. One ticket includes self-guided visits to the chapel and the tower with its imperial-style roof, as well as a guided tour of the library and the salons. For your visit, the offer therefore distinguishes between areas you can explore freely and rooms that are part of a guided tour.
Église Sainte-Julitte Saint-Cyr is also protected: a decree dated 6 January 1926 listed it as a historic monument. An oak timber structure dating from the 13th century sits above the bell tower, transept and choir bay. While the château’s protected features include façades, roofs and an access bridge, the church’s wooden structure is a distinctive architectural feature.
Other traces lead to different locations. The site of Bizard, near Château du Gué-Péan, contains ruins and the remains of a chapel. The Neolithic polishing stones at La Crémaillère, meanwhile, have very well-preserved polished surfaces. You can consider the château visit, church architecture and archaeological traces as distinct themes for your stay.
The Cher, Bavet and municipal pond
The Cher borders Monthou-Sur-Cher to the south for more than three kilometres. In the past, the river near Monthou-sur-Cher was used for fishing and navigation. A current fishing requirement applies instead to the municipal pond: an inter-federation fishing permit or one of seven other permits from the French anglers’ federation is required. Regulations may change, so check the current permit requirements before fishing.
A fitness trail runs alongside the Bavet near the municipal pond. Check the current condition of the facility before visiting. You can also reach the mills of the Vallée des Meuniers by walking downstream along the Bavet. The references to water are easy to distinguish: past fishing and navigation relate to the Cher, the permit requirement applies to the municipal pond, and the fitness trail is beside the Bavet.
Horse riding: experience level and route
Ecuries du Gué-Péan welcomes riders aged three and over, from beginners to advanced. Activities include riding lessons, courses and show jumping. A separate horse-riding route starts in Monthou-sur-Cher: “gué péan - thenay par la foret de choussy” is 28 kilometres long and takes five hours. At the Ecuries, age limit and experience level are important details; for the route, distance and time required are the main considerations. If a particular date is important to you, check the current availability of the riding experiences in advance.
