For a trip to Loiret, culture, nature, outdoor activities and regional specialities offer different points of focus. Castles and museums tell stories of architecture, perfume, hunting and more recent history; cycling routes, forests and waterways open up other possibilities. You can plan around what interests you most, rather than trying to pack every aspect into a single itinerary.

Castles, Museums and History

The Château de Sully-sur-Loire is a medieval fortress that traces seven centuries of history. At the Château de Chamerolles, the Promenade des parfums explores the history of perfume and personal care. The two cultural sites have different focuses: the long history of a fortress at one, and an aspect of everyday cultural history at the other.

Built in 1482, the Château-musée de Gien is an example of pre-Renaissance architecture. Its interactive museum explores hunting techniques and the history of hunting in the Loire Valley. The building’s history and the museum’s subject complement one another, without requiring you to focus on just one historical perspective. The Musée de la Faïencerie de Gien offers guided visits to its collections, conferences and factory tours. As formats and dates may change, check in advance what is on offer during your visit.

In Lorris, the Musée départemental de la Résistance et de la Déportation traces wartime life in Loiret through contemporary documents, eyewitness accounts, objects and weapons. It covers the main phases of the Second World War and everyday life under German occupation. At the quays in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, mooring rings and distance markers recall the Loire’s historic port activity. Near Mareau-aux-Prés, you can follow an educational trail along the Loire.

On a broader scale, the cultural landscape of the Loire Valley stretches for 280 kilometres, from Sully-sur-Loire east of Orléans to Chalonnes. This extensive landscape provides an additional point of reference alongside the individual cultural sites.

Forest, Water and Cycling Routes

The Forêt d’Orléans offers a tangible glimpse of biodiversity: it is home to more than 180 bird species and more than 730 plant species, including 30 plants that are rare nationally or regionally. Its habitats are also home to eleven diurnal and four nocturnal birds of prey, including ospreys. These figures show that its diversity extends beyond any one group of plants or animals.

For cycling travellers, La Loire à Vélo offers a total of 155 kilometres of cycling routes that run in or near Loiret. The Loiret section runs from Beaulieu-sur-Loire to Tavers. The routes include paved greenways, minor roads and low-traffic roads. These endpoints and the different types of route both offer useful pointers for planning.

The Canal d’Orléans has 80 kilometres of waterways and 27 locks. It offers outings by bicycle, boat and on foot, as well as two leisure centres. If you’re planning a boat trip, it’s worth checking the latest navigation conditions.

Regional Specialities

Culinary traditions also offer distinctive regional connections. Cendré d’Olivet is a cow’s milk cheese that originated in Loiret and is now made in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire. Charcutiers in Jargeau have been making Andouille de Jargeau for nearly nine centuries. Pithiviers traditionally comes in two forms: a glazed almond cake or a puff pastry version.

The Coteaux du Giennois wine-growing area spans five communes between Gien and Beaulieu-sur-Loire; it has had AOC designation since 1998. Orléans is associated with a vinegar-making tradition whose method dates back to provisions in a royal decree of 1580. Maison Martin-Pouret has been making vinegar in Orléans since 1797. These examples differ considerably: cheese, sausage and pastries sit alongside wine-growing and vinegar-making, illustrating different facets of regional food culture.
