Accommodation in Baye
When looking for a hotel in Baye, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the architectural history of the church and château chapel, the pilgrimage to Saint Roch, and a 13.52-kilometre circular walk each offer a different theme.
Church and château chapel: construction history in several stages
The main construction phases of the Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul span the 12th, 13th, and 16th centuries. It was classified as a historic monument by decree on 14 March 1986. Its long construction history and the precisely dated protection status are two distinct aspects.
The chapel of Château Saint-Alpin is the oldest surviving part of the château and was built between 1205 and 1220. Historic monument protection applies only to the chapel, not to the château as a whole. The windows also tell of different eras: five original stained-glass windows in the chapel were restored, supplemented, and reinstalled in 1966. Archival records document the Chapelle Saint-Roch as early as 1552.
Abbaye d’Andecy: foundation, construction, and exhibition
Abbaye d’Andecy was founded by Simon de Broyes in 1131. The central building dates from the 18th century. The foundation year and the construction period of the central building thus mark different stages in the abbey’s history.
The restored dovecote is also a visitor attraction: it is open to the public and houses a permanent exhibition on restoration techniques and the abbey’s history. Check visitor information before you travel so you can include the exhibition in your plans.
Pilgrimage, guided tours, and a circular walk
The pilgrimage to Saint Roch takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. As the Sunday falls on a different calendar date each year, it is worth checking the exact date for your planned travel year.
Guided tours of the stained-glass windows in the Chapelle Saint-Alpin are offered mainly as part of six-day spiritual retreats and the European Heritage Days. The Foyer de Charité de Baye offers six-day retreats. If you would like to plan such a tour, check the latest dates and tour arrangements before your trip.
For outdoor exercise, try the circular walk on the GRP® Thibaut de Champagne. The route starts at the car park of the Foyer rural in Baye, is 13.52 kilometres long, is of moderate difficulty, and returns to the starting point. Part of the GRP® follows the former route of the Reims suburban railway (CBR). This makes the walk different both from the annual pilgrimage and from the themed guided tours. Check trail conditions before setting out.
