Discover Jâlons through two historical perspectives: the milling and industrial history of the Minoterie Wagner et Legile, and the sacred art of the Église Saint-Ephrem. The town is also connected to the Somme-Soude, Somme and Marne rivers, and to the Carrière de Jâlons open-pit quarry in the Marne Valley. If you would like to combine a stay with cultural history, these subjects reveal different sides of the area: industrial processing, church architecture, sculpture and landscape.

Milling History and River Landscape

The Minoterie Wagner et Legile is located in Jâlons, on the Somme-Soude and along the RN 3. A mill building dating from the 19th century was expanded into a flour mill in the first half of the 20th century. In 1960, the flour mill processed 200 quintals of wheat per day—equivalent to 20 tonnes—for bakeries. The river names indicate different connections to the area: the flour mill is on the Somme-Soude, while the Somme itself flows into the Marne at Jâlons.

Church, Crypt and Sculptures

The Église Saint-Ephrem offers a different perspective. It is a protected historic monument; it was listed by decree on 8 July 1912. Its oldest part is a Romanesque crypt beneath the choir on the east side. The church’s protection date thus sits alongside a specific detail of its earlier architectural history.

The statue of the Virgin and Child is a polychrome stone sculpture dating from the first quarter of the 14th century. Polychrome means decorated in several colours; this detail adds colour to the description of the stone material. The statue of Saint Catherine in Jâlons dates from the 15th century and was restored by Muriel Oiry in 2013. The dating of the two figures and the later restoration therefore relate to different periods.

A statue of Saint Ephrem in the church was protected as movable cultural property on 29 November 1982. The address of the Église Saint-Ephrem is 12 Rue de la Mairie, 51150 Jâlons. The building’s history is thus complemented by the protection history of an individual work of art and a precise location.

Carrière de Jâlons and the Marne Valley

The Carrière de Jâlons is an open-pit sand and gravel quarry in ancient deposits of the Marne Valley. Compared thematically with the flour mill, the focus shifts from wheat to the extraction of mineral raw materials; at the same time, the valley’s geological setting comes to the fore. The mill and the open-pit quarry thus represent different aspects of the area’s and landscape’s history.

In 2023, the Carrière was part of the European Heritage Days programme. On 16 September 2023, a free self-guided visit was offered there from 08:00 to 12:00; sturdy footwear was required. A different format was offered at the 2019 Heritage Day at the Église Saint-Ephrem: a guided tour of sacred art accompanied by a watercolour exhibition. The two past programmes therefore differed in format—a self-guided visit at the Carrière and a guided tour at the church.
