Potangis offers three specific points of interest to help plan your trip: the wetland landscape with its stream, the parish church of Saint-Martin and a circular cycling route that passes through the village. If you are looking for hotels in Potangis, you can first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: nature, architectural history or cycling.

Landscape, Water and Wetland

The village’s elevation range falls within the broader topographical range of the municipality; the figures therefore describe different spatial scales. The Ruisseau de Potangis, also known as the Ruisseau de Bécheret, rises in the heart of the village. It is a right-bank tributary of the Seine and flows into the Seine within the municipality of Esclavolles-Lurey. A wet valley lies on the edge of the village. Dense, orderly stands of trees line both sides of the stream, consisting predominantly of a poplar plantation. “Right-bank” refers to the side of the Seine when looking downstream; the term describes where the stream joins the river, not where it rises. The Ruisseau de Potangis has its source and confluence in different places: in the village and within the municipality of Esclavolles-Lurey, respectively.

The ZNIEFF I “Le Grand Marais et les Marais de Villiers entre Potangis et Conflans-sur-Seine” covers a total of 106 hectares. It is divided into two sections: one south of the village of Potangis and one north of the municipality of Conflans-sur-Seine. Potangis is one of the municipalities included in this area. The 106 hectares refer to the entire ZNIEFF, including both sections, not only the part south of Potangis.

Saint-Martin and the Architecture of the Village

Surrounded by its cemetery, the parish church of Saint-Martin was built in the 16th century in a style that was still Gothic. It has three aisles of equal height, without vaults, connected by arcades. The polygonal choir is lit by windows with flamboyant tracery. The term “flamboyant” refers to tracery patterns that resemble flames and helps to identify the window ornament more precisely. Architecturally, there are two distinct elements: the three aisles divide the church interior, while the tracery decorates the choir windows.
