Arc-Et-Senans: Saline Royale and architectural history
Accommodation in Arc-Et-Senans
If you are looking for a hotel in Arc-Et-Senans, you can plan your stay around a clearly defined cultural theme: the Saline Royale and its history as a saltworks. The Claude Nicolas Ledoux Museum, the gardens of Un Cercle Immense, and the Église Sainte-Bénigne complement this focus with architecture, gardens, and sacred art.
Saline Royale: a planned factory complex
The Saline Royale was built at the request of Louis XV as a saltworks; construction took place between 1775 and 1779. Designed as an integrated factory, it was laid out in a semicircle and comprised eleven buildings for production and workers’ accommodation. The semicircular layout links the buildings as part of a shared factory plan; the complex therefore combined production areas with residential functions. In 1982, the Saline Royale was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. These dates reflect different historical periods: the construction phase in the 18th century and its later designation as a World Heritage Site.
Architecture, models, and historical context
The Claude Nicolas Ledoux Museum is the only museum in Europe dedicated to an architect. Around 60 models illustrate the built and unrealized works of Claude Nicolas Ledoux. The collection therefore presents completed works alongside designs that were never realized—two different outcomes of architectural planning. The HistoPad offers another way to explore the Saline: visitors use augmented reality to discover the 18th-century complex and encounter the salt workers. While the models contrast Ledoux’s built and unrealized work, the HistoPad focuses on how the Saline was used at the time and on the people who worked in salt production.
Gardens with different themes
The gardens of Un Cercle Immense include a garden of medicinal and aromatic plants, a Jura Arc garden, a willow garden, and an organic vegetable garden. The gardens thus offer a clear counterpoint to the two architectural themes: their focus is on medicinal and aromatic plants, the Jura Arc, willows, and organic vegetable growing.
Church and works of art
The Église Sainte-Bénigne was consecrated in 1852 and built by the architect Max Painchaux. It contains ten works of art from the 16th and 17th centuries. The building and the works therefore belong to different periods: the consecration dates to the 19th century, while the works of art span two earlier centuries. Unguided visits are possible at any time. The dates also show different time frames when compared with the Saline: the Saline was built between 1775 and 1779, the church was consecrated in 1852, and the Saline was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982. This makes it possible to distinguish the construction periods from the later World Heritage designation.
