Discover Flagey: Ferme Courbet, garden and trails
Accommodation in Flagey
Discover Flagey through Ferme Courbet: this 18th-century farmhouse once belonged to the family of painter Gustave Courbet and was restored as part of the cultural project “Pays de Courbet, pays d’artiste”. Since opening in 2009, the Ferme has been an independent cultural venue with numerous temporary exhibitions and events. Alongside the farm’s cultural history, Flagey also offers gardens, hiking and cycling as possible themes for a stay.
Culture at Ferme Courbet
The Ferme houses the literary café “Le café de Juliette”, an exhibition space with two exhibitions a year, and a room for artistic workshops and events. Literature, changing exhibitions and artistic activities each bring a different focus to the cultural venue. The programme may change, so check the current programme and visitor information before your visit.
The “Jeux d’exploration” comprise three discovery games for families about Juliette Courbet, Régis Courbet and the location of the family farm. They let families shape their visit around different topics rather than focusing on just one. If the games are important to your plans, it is also advisable to check the latest visitor information.
Garden and a break
The garden at Ferme Courbet was reconstructed to make it look as much as possible like a 19th-century garden. Together with the 18th-century farmhouse, it adds another historical dimension to a visit. The orchard is next to the picnic area by the garden at Ferme Courbet and offers a place to take a break before or after your visit.
Hiking in Flagey
Two easy hikes offer a basis for comparison in terms of distance and stated duration. The easy circular trail “Sentier Courbet 3: Sur les pas du peintre paysan” is 7.2 kilometres long, takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and starts and ends at the Ferme familiale Courbet. The easy Parcours de la Cuderie hiking route runs through Flagey, is 7.71 kilometres long and returns to its starting point at the Ferme de Flagey; its average duration is 2 hours and 35 minutes.
The Cuderie route is slightly longer than Sentier Courbet 3, while the stated durations are close. This lets you compare the two options by their stated time and distance. Saut de Bonneille is near the village of Flagey, where Gustave Courbet was born. It is about 20 metres high and lies on hiking route no. 30. Check the route details locally before setting off.
Cycle to Flagey
The cycling tour “Gustave à bicyclette” leads to Flagey and includes a cultural stop at Ferme Courbet. Numbered Points-noeuds at every junction help you find your way along the tour. The route thus combines a planned cultural stop with a navigation aid along the way. Check the route details and signage before setting off.
