Hauterive-La-Fresse: Hiking, Winter Trails and Border Landscapes
Accommodation in Hauterive-La-Fresse
Hauterive-La-Fresse lies on a mountainside between 778 and 1,210 metres above sea level. The Doubs forms the boundary of the commune on one side, and a ridge on the Swiss border on the other. The elevation and border landscape provide a defining backdrop for planning a trip. Activities also vary by season and route type: alongside summer hiking and mountain biking trails, there are snowshoe trails in the Nordic area.
Hiking and mountain biking
The Grande Traversée du Jura (GTJ) passes through Hauterive-La-Fresse. There are also marked hiking and mountain biking trails for summer outings. These trails offer ways to explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike. Conditions on individual routes may vary.
One clearly defined circular route is the CĂ´te du Cerf: the moderately difficult trail is 10.3 kilometres long, follows the border ridge, and starts and ends in La Perdrix. It can also be ridden by mountain bike. The CĂ´te du Cerf and the GTJ represent different formats: a circular route with a set start and finish, and a route that passes through the commune. La Perdrix is also at the foot of cross-country ski trails and hiking paths.
Winter trails and the border region
The Haut Saugeais Blanc Nordic area spans Hauterive-La-Fresse, Les Alliés and Ville-du-Pont, and provides access in the direction of neighbouring Switzerland. Two marked snowshoe trails have a combined length of four kilometres; their availability depends on snow conditions. The distances refer to different route types: four kilometres in total for two snowshoe trails, and 10.3 kilometres for a single circular route.
In summer, you can also plan to go canoeing or kayaking on the Doubs. Check local access and conditions beforehand before making firm plans for this activity.
Landscape and cultural connections
From the Rochers du Cerf viewpoint, you can see the Jura ridges and peaks of the Pays Horloger and Haut-Doubs, as well as the Alps. A border café once stood on the Côte du Cerf and was an important meeting place for Swiss and French customs officers. Here, a landscape experience meets a story of the historic border.
Hauterive-La-Fresse is one of five communes that own the Abbaye de Montbenoît. The historic, tourist and cultural route La Vy aux Moines crosses the Jura Massif from Môtiers in Switzerland to Montbenoît in France. It is a French-Swiss route with cultural connections on both sides of the massif.
When to visit and finding a hotel
The seasonal difference is key when choosing when to visit: in summer, hiking, mountain biking and canoeing or kayaking on the Doubs take centre stage; in winter, snowshoe trails depend on snow conditions, while cross-country ski trails offer another point of interest. Check snow conditions and local access and conditions on the Doubs before making firm plans for these outings; you can then compare hotel offers based on your travel dates.
