Mamirolle: Hiking, Heritage and Encounters
Accommodation in Mamirolle
Mamirolle brings together a specifically described hiking trail, religious history and local visitor activities. The village lies on the first tier of the Jura plateaus. When planning a stay, you can therefore consider different points of interest: a route with a stated length and duration, distinctive features of the church and pilgrimage history, or encounters with animals.
Hiking and scenery
The Sentier du Bois de la Fougère starts in the village and passes through the forest of the same name. The easy route is 7.9 kilometres long, with a stated duration of two hours. These details give you a concrete framework for fitting the hike into the rest of your stay. The trail also offers insight into the typical agricultural landscapes of the first Jura plateaus. Mamirolle’s location on the first tier of these plateaus provides a landscape setting for the walk.
The Via Francigena covers a different scale: the GR®-145 section from Saône to Foucherans passes through Mamirolle. The Via Francigena is a medieval pilgrimage route and was recognised as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe in 2004. This makes it possible to distinguish the local hike, with its clearly stated length and duration, from the history of a long-distance pilgrimage route that also passes through Mamirolle.
Church, architecture and pilgrimage history
The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul was built on remains dating from the 12th century. Its distinctive architectural features include a flat ceiling and the absence of galleries. These features are considered rare in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Visitors interested in church architecture will find two precise points to look out for: the shape of the ceiling and the design of the church interior without galleries.
The Vierge des Ermites also connects a specific location with Mamirolle’s pilgrimage history. The statue is venerated in a small oratory at the entrance to the village. Jean-Baptiste Isabey, a pilgrim from Mamirolle, brought it here in 1779. Together, the oratory, statue and year provide a distinct focus on local religious history alongside the church architecture and the Via Francigena.
Encounters and local activities
At Lama Loisir Mamirolle, the activities include special encounters with llamas, goats, sheep, ponies, rabbits and poultry-farm animals. Feeding the animals is also part of the visit. This offers an opportunity to meet a variety of animals alongside the village’s landscape and historical attractions. The animals mentioned and the feeding activity describe the visit without making any claim about its suitability for particular age groups.
The Brindezingue brewery offers tours and on-site sales by appointment; collections also take place by appointment. If you would like to include this in your plans, arrange an appointment in advance. There is also a 24-hour vending machine for products on the ENILEA campus, next to the shop in the car park. Since campus facilities may change, check the current status before your visit if you plan to rely on the vending machine.
