Saint-Julien offers several different starting points for planning a trip: religious art and history, botanically described dry grasslands, and activities around Montagne de la Roche. If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-Julien, first decide whether culture, nature watching or a sporting activity will shape your stay. Cycling, hiking and motorised sports each have their own specific conditions; you can take these differences into account when planning, too.

Culture and history

Saint-Julien de Saint-Julien is a religious monument in the commune of La Roche-Morey in the Haute-Saône department. Four objects are listed in Église Saint-Julien. One ensemble from the main altar includes a painting of “La Cène” (the Last Supper), as well as a statue of Christ and one of Saint Julien.

The remains of a feudal castle, destroyed in 1354, are located on Montagne de la Roche. Montagne de la Roche is also home to three prehistoric sites of national renown. If you organise cultural history by period, these aspects are clearly distinct.

Nature and landscape

Dry grasslands lie north of the cemetery in Saint-Julien. They are calcareous plant communities featuring upright brome and fescue grass. Visitors can observe numerous bird-of-prey species on Montagne de la Roche. The nature-related themes have different emphases: the dry grasslands focus on plant life and the character of the site, while Montagne de la Roche offers birdwatching.

Cycling, hiking and other activities

The Boucle cyclable n°20 Jules Rimet leads to La Roche-Morey, reaching the foot of Montagne de la Roche. From there, the summit can be reached by bicycle, but it requires strong pedalling. In the wider area of the commune of La Roche-Morey, the “Le tour de la montagne de la Roche” hike provides access to the hilltop. In suitable weather conditions, the hike offers views of the Vosges, the Jura and even the Alps.

The two routes have different features to consider when choosing between them: the cycling route is described as requiring strong pedalling to reach the summit, while the hike provides access to the summit with long-distance views that depend on the weather.

The Terrain Endurance Tout Terrain is authorised for motocross, enduro and quad biking, and is open to anyone who is appropriately equipped and insured. Equipment and insurance are therefore specific conditions of participation. Ecole Club Ball Trap offers introductory sessions in clay pigeon shooting—another distinct sporting focus. The activities differ in how you can take part: the terrain is authorised for the motorised sports listed and subject to equipment and insurance requirements; Ecole Club Ball Trap offers introductory sessions in clay pigeon shooting. When choosing, you can therefore weigh the participation requirements against the introductory format.
