Dry-stone paths, the Church of Saint-Gilles and a limestone landscape shaped by water offer different ways to experience Blois-sur-Seille during a stay. You can focus on hiking, rural architecture or nature. These differences are particularly tangible on the routes: alongside relatively easy circular walks, there is also a route rated as difficult to choose from.

Lapiaz, springs and the Seille

Water has fractured the limestone of the local plateau, forming deep lapiaz grooves. The karst landscape is part of the Reculées de la haute Seille Natura 2000 site, which covers 1,420 hectares. Blois-sur-Seille is one of the communes in this area. Its habitats include forests, rocky habitats, running waters, tufa springs, natural and semi-natural grasslands, and caves. Peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) and eagle owls (Bubo bubo) are also found there.

There are numerous springs at the foot of the cliffs of the reculée; some made it possible to build wells in the village. Rivulets, streams and brooks from the surrounding area feed the Seille. Limestone, spring water and flowing water thus come together in the landscape. The Natura 2000 site provides a broader natural context, while springs and wells also play a role in the village’s history.

Hiking routes with varying levels of difficulty

The Sentier des pierres sèches has two relatively easy circular routes. The shorter loop is 2.5 kilometres long and passes eight huts; the 5.15-kilometre loop has twelve huts. Along the way, you will come across shepherds’ huts, known as cabordes, and dry-stone walls called “murgers.” The longer loop is 2.65 kilometres longer and has four more huts.

The La Reculée de Blois-sur-Seille circular hike is rated differently: it is six kilometres long, takes about two and a half hours and is considered difficult. As a circular route, it is classified under geology and nature and carries the “Boucles Échappée Jurassienne” label. This makes the short, relatively easy loops of the Sentier des pierres sèches quite different from the longer, more challenging Reculée route. Check local trail access conditions before setting out.

The starting point of the La Reculée loop is on the village square, next to the lower station of the former milk cableway. A section of the GR 59 between Château-Chalon and La Marre is associated with the hiking route; two PDIPR trails are also linked to it, following routes via Côte du Chaumois Martin and Vieux Mont. These names provide additional landmarks for planning alongside the specific route details.

Village history and rural architecture

The Blois-sur-Seille milk cableway is considered unique in France. It was used to transport milk to the village cheese dairy, where it was made into Comté. As a former milk cableway, it points to the connection between dairy farming and cheesemaking in the village. Its lower station is also the starting point for the La Reculée circular hike.

The Church of Saint-Gilles also offers several distinct historical points of reference. The date 1670 inscribed on a holy-water font appears to correspond to the construction of the church. The side aisles were built in 1808, and the cemetery cross beside the church bears the date 1765. The dates therefore refer to different elements: the presumed construction of the church, the side aisles and the cross. Together with the cabordes and murgers on the Sentier des pierres sèches, they give rural architecture a tangible place in your trip planning.
