Censeau: Triptych and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Censeau
When planning a trip to Censeau, you can choose between two distinct focuses: the history of the triptych in the Église de l’Assomption and hikes along routes that pass through Censeau. If you are looking for hotels, you can plan your stay around whether you want to devote more time to local art history or to a stage hike.
Art history at the Église de l’Assomption
The Église de l’Assomption was built in 1749 and is religious heritage. Its altar features a triptych by Jean Poyer, created between 1500 and 1502. The artwork is therefore older than the church building: the structure and the altarpiece represent different periods in the history of the place.
The triptych’s three panels have been listed as Monuments historiques since 1930. The work is considered one of the major works of French painting. Its history includes not only its creation and art-historical classification, but also changes to the work itself. The church and the altarpiece have different classifications: the Église de l’Assomption is religious heritage, while the listing as Monuments historiques since 1930 explicitly applies to the triptych’s three panels. This distinction is useful for understanding the site’s history: it clearly distinguishes the building from the artwork.
During the French Revolution, the triptych was divided up and sold to the state. It was later reconstructed and restored, and exhibited at the Musée du Louvre for several months. It then returned to Censeau. However, the central panel that exists today is not the original—an important part of the work’s history of transmission.
Hiking trails through Censeau
The GRP Champagnole Nozeroy Jura passes through Censeau. The 129.2-kilometer hike is designed to take seven days. Landscape features along the route include forests, waterways, and pastures; for the most part, the GRP runs through the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura. If you are planning this route, check trail conditions and accessibility before setting out.
ViaCluny is a marked hiking network stretching 550 kilometers between Switzerland and France. The Bief du Fourg–Nozeroy stage crosses the second plateau and also passes through Censeau. It thus connects the village with a specifically named stage within a cross-border trail network.
For planning purposes, it is important to distinguish between the different scales: the 129.2 kilometers and seven days refer to the GRP as a planned multi-stage hike; the 550 kilometers describe the ViaCluny network as a whole. The Bief du Fourg–Nozeroy stage is a specific section of this network. This makes it possible to distinguish between a multi-day hike, the size of a trail network, and a named stage.
