Hikes at the Source de l’Ain give a trip to Conte a clear focus. The trails vary in length, difficulty, elevation gain, and route; waterfalls, bridges, and a viewpoint add to the possible places to visit.

Hiking routes with different profiles

The easy, signposted out-and-back route “Sentier Interprétation - source de l’Ain - La promenade” is 2.9 kilometers long and includes 36 meters of elevation gain (as of August 15, 2026). The start and finish are at the Source de l’Ain parking lot in Conte. The route is marked in orange and also carries GRP markings. Its distance, elevation gain, and route format make it easy to plan as a day trip.

The “Source de l’Ain” route is a moderately difficult circular hike covering 10.4 kilometers with 298 meters of elevation gain (as of August 15, 2026). It also starts and ends at the Source de l’Ain parking lot in Conte. Forests, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls are its main themes. It is signposted with GRP and PR markings. Compared with the easy out-and-back route, the circular hike is longer and has more elevation gain.

Another route is called “Sentier Interprétation - source de l’Ain - La boucle des passerelles”. It includes two footbridges, one of them a suspension bridge over the Ain (as of August 8, 2026). This route is notable for a specific river crossing.

Spring, river, and waterfalls

The Ain rises at an elevation of 681 meters between the villages of Conte and La Favière. The Source de l’Ain is a Vaucluse-type spring and a geological feature of note. The river’s source thus links a specific location with a geological classification. For travelers interested in springs, this natural feature adds to the choice of trails with different profiles.

The waterfalls have different features. The Cascade du Moulin du Saut can be reached via a small path and offers a place by the water for a picnic or a break. The Cascade du Moulinet is 20 meters high; a marked path leads downhill to it from the Le Moulinet signpost. The two destinations can therefore be distinguished by their features: at Moulin du Saut, the path to the water and a place to rest are the main attractions; at Moulinet, it is the height and the marked descent.

Viewpoint and horseback riding

A tourism description updated on September 14, 2022, notes that the existing Saut des Maillys viewpoint was renovated and enlarged. Check local access conditions before setting out.

The Centre Équestre de la Cavalerie de la Source in Conte offers riding lessons for all levels and ages, horse boarding, and rides to explore the surrounding region. The options cover a range of activities: riding lessons, horse boarding, or a ride. If horseback riding is part of your travel plans, you can consider this as a separate activity alongside the hikes.
