Lac Des Rouges Truites – Nature, Trails and Hotels
Accommodation in Lac Des Rouges Truites
In Lac Des Rouges Truites, wetlands, trails, winter activities and local heritage offer different ways to plan your stay. There are also specific circular routes, a church in Les Thévenins and historic cheese dairies. If you are looking for hotels in Lac Des Rouges Truites, you can first consider whether nature, outdoor activities or heritage will be the focus of your trip.
Wetlands and biodiversity
The lac des Rouges Truites wetland is part of the Ramsar site “tourbières et lacs de la montagne jurassienne” and is designated an Espace naturel sensible by the Jura Department. The ZNIEFF known as “LAC DES ROUGES TRUITES” is a type 1 ecological zone covering 79 hectares in Lac-des-Rouges-Truites; it is subject to a prefectural order protecting its biotope.
Within the zone, the small lake is surrounded by an alkaline fen. Typical plants include bog bilberry and cranberry. A floating mat of peat with pools gives way to a raised bog. Almost 900 species have been recorded in the wetland so far; this number may increase as further surveys are carried out. The outflow of lac des Rouges Truites also provides a suitable habitat for the white-clawed crayfish, which is protected by a prefectural order.
Trails by the lake and through the wetland
The Sentier de découverte du lac des Rouges Truites « Chacun son rythme » starts at the Domaine du Bugnon car park and follows the “Sentier du tour du lac” trail markers. Along the trail, there are interpretation materials and observation facilities; a developed platform is located near the wetland. This trail is not accessible when there is snow.
The Circuit de découverte du lac des Rouges Truites is designated as an interpretive walking trail. The very easy circular route is 3.9 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of one hour and 54 metres of ascent and descent. Its maximum elevation is 935 metres. The distance, time and elevation gain give you a clear idea of what to expect from this loop.
Winter activities and cross-country ski trails
The Domaine du Bugnon offers cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing on marked trails, including a prepared multi-use trail. Activities depend on snow conditions. The Site Nordique du Lac des Rouges Truites has groomed trails for classic cross-country skiing and skating: five green, two blue and one red trail, as well as a link to Foncine-le-Haut and Chapelle-des-Bois. The trail layout may change with snow conditions or future changes to the network.
At the Domaine du Bugnon, you can rent cross-country skis, sleds and snowshoes for the Site Nordique. As winter services may vary, check availability before travelling. When planning for the season, it is also useful to note the difference from the lakeside trail: the Sentier « Chacun son rythme » is not accessible when there is snow, while the winter sports activities described depend on snow conditions.
Mountain biking and heritage
Vers les Moulins - 67V is listed as an official route in the Geotrek network. It features both shaded and sunny trails, making it suitable for an introduction to mountain biking. Aspects of Grandvaux heritage highlighted along the route include a wetland, a former mill, the Voie du tram and a cheese dairy.
The Circuit de découverte du lac des Rouges Truites leads to the hamlet of Les Thévenins. There, a former cheese dairy founded in 1905 stands along the route. Les Thévenins is also home to the Église paroissiale de la Nativité de Notre-Dame, which dates mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and the church also has a rib vault. The bell tower has paired sound openings, and the apse has pointed-arch windows.
Cheese dairies, or fruitières, have been recorded in Lac-des-Rouges-Truites since 1794. In 1859, there were four: le Maréchet, les Martins, les Thévenins and le Voisinal. Together with the former cheese dairy on the route to Les Thévenins, these historical details offer a concrete starting point if you are interested in local cheese history.
