Lajoux in the Haut-Jura: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Lajoux
Lajoux lies in the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park and is characterized by forests, extensive pastures and unspoiled landscapes. Hiking, history and seasonal activities give the village its distinctive character.
Landscapes and Views in the Haut-Jura
The Sentier de la forĂȘt du Massacre (Forest of Massacre Trail) passes through the Hautes Combes. Earlier clearances created open areas there, where a rich variety of flora has developed. The trail thus links woodland with open areas that are among the characteristic landscapes of the Hautes Combes.
From the CrĂȘt de la Vigoureuse viewpoint, the view extends across the Haute-ChaĂźne du Jura and the Hautes-Combes. On a clear day, the Mont Blanc is also visible. Weather conditions are crucial for this distant view; regardless, the Jura ridge and the Hautes-Combes form the panoramic vista described here.
Historic Trails and Walks
The Route Royale, also known as the Route du Sel (Salt Road), linked Saint-Claude with Geneva via Mijoux and Gex. It was built in 1742 and was replaced in the early 20th century by the present-day road between Lajoux and the Col de la Faucille. This sequence of events distinguishes the historic route from the later road connection.
The Sentier touffu des vigoureux de Lajoux is considered a family-friendly walk to the CrĂȘt de la Vigoureuse viewpoint. It passes through forests, open woodland pastures and grazing landscapes before reaching the summit viewpoint. A hiking route to the CrĂȘt de la Vigoureuse starts in Lajoux and is considered easy. As trail conditions can change with the seasons, it is advisable to check them before setting out.
Another family-friendly option is JurâAventures: TrĂ©sors et racines de Lajoux, an augmented-reality discovery trail through the village. It starts at the tourist office, is 2.5 kilometres long and takes about 1.5 hours. Check that the route is digitally available before your trip. This helps distinguish between two different planning considerations: for the hike to the CrĂȘt, the fact that it is considered easy is key; for JurâAventures, the distance and approximate duration are also provided.
Winter Activities
The Nordic ski area in Lajoux has seven cross-country ski trails, two downhill ski runs, seven snowshoe trails and a dog-sledding route. The selection therefore includes several types of winter activity. As seasonal facilities, conditions depend on snow and weather.
Stage 19 of the GTJ-Ski route runs from Carrefour du Massacre to Le Manon in Lajoux. It is 9.2 kilometres long; whether it can be completed may depend on winter conditions. By comparison, the 2.5-kilometre JurâAventures route, with an approximate duration of 1.5 hours, is a different kind of planning measure: the figures help put each activity into perspective without implying that the two routes have the same conditions.
Maison du Parc and Regional Insights
The Maison du Parc in Lajoux is the headquarters of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park. Visitors can find information and a shop there; there is also a permanent exhibition. âHaut-Jura, terre vivante!â (Haut-Jura, a Living Land!) features playful, sensory and interactive installations. The exhibition offers a distinct way to explore themes of the Haut-Jura, while an immersive sound experience brings the Risoux Forest to life.
A visit to a grenier-fort (traditional fortified granary) is also part of the Maison du Parc experience. Its interpretation recalls life 200 years ago, as well as customs officers and smugglers. Together with the permanent exhibitionâs installations, it offers a shift between a sensory approach to landscapes and nature and a historical perspective on life along the border.
Cheese from Lajoux
The Fromagerie de Lajoux (Lajoux Cheese Dairy) processes milk from around six farms to make Bleu de Gex Haut-Jura, Morbier and Raclette. It sells cheeses made on site as well as regional products. If this shopping stop is part of your travel plans, check the current selection before you arrive.
