Lamoura: Lake, Nature and Winter Sports
Accommodation in Lamoura
Lamoura brings together Lac de Lamoura and its wetlands, cycling and winter sports, and the local Musée des Lapidaires. The activities suit different interests and times of year: swimming conditions at the lake are important, winter sports are seasonal, and the Fête de l’Abonde takes place on 15 August. You can plan your stay around the landscape, physical activity or crafts.
Explore the lake and wetlands on foot
Lac de Lamoura lies at an altitude of 1,155 metres and is the highest of the Jura lakes. The Sentier du Lac de Lamoura runs around the lake. A wooden boardwalk crosses wetlands and a marsh without disturbing these sensitive habitats. Six information panels along the trail cover the geology of the valley, the historic use of water power and the lake’s aquatic life. If you’re interested in the landscape and how it has been used, you’ll find several topics along the same loop.
The beach is supervised in July and August. A notice dated 27 July 2026 stated that swimming and water sports in the bathing area had been prohibited since 18 July, after anatoxins were detected there. Check current conditions before swimming.
Cycling and winter sports
The loop ride Les hauteurs de Lamoura is part of the Jurassic Vélo Tours network. It is 48 kilometres long, rated moderate, and passes through Lajoux, Prémanon and Lamoura. The high-altitude landscape takes in combes, marshes, wild meadows and mountain forests around Lac de Lamoura. Its length and difficulty rating give you practical details to consider when comparing this ride with other travel plans.
The main part of the Forêt du Massacre lies north of Pièce d’Aval. There, a prefectural order protecting biotopes regulates travel on foot, on skis and by car.
In winter, the Site Nordique de Lamoura offers cross-country skiing and marked snowshoeing routes. Downhill skiing is available in Lamoura via the La Serra lifts. Lamoura is also the starting point for the Transjurassienne cross-country ski race: the route covers 68 kilometres to Mouthe in the Doubs department. The race arrangements may vary from one edition to another. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and downhill skiing offer different ways to enjoy winter in Lamoura; the Transjurassienne adds a race with a set finish point to the options.
Stoneworking, events and leisure
The Musée des Lapidaires tells the story of stoneworking in the Haut-Jura, a craft practised there from the 18th century to the present day. For groups of at least twelve adults, the museum offers a guided tour with a documentary film, lasting between one and a half and two hours; dates may vary. During school holidays, children’s workshops are held under the title “Le monde des pierres”. The workshops available may differ from one holiday period to another.
The Fête de l’Abonde takes place every year in Lamoura on 15 August. The programme includes street theatre and a look at local crafts; individual events may change. Gaïa Loisirs offers something different: a family leisure park with suspended nets in the trees, large wooden games and activities on foot, on horseback, with ponies or with donkeys. The museum, festival and leisure park showcase different aspects of the area: crafts, local culture and a variety of activities.
