Longchaumois: Nature, Heritage and Cycling
Accommodation in Longchaumois
Longchaumois offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: botanical exhibitions, regional and industrial history, and activities on two wheels and on foot. When looking for hotels in Longchaumois, you can start by considering whether plants and nature, crafts or time on the trails will shape your stay. The attractions differ considerably in focus, making it easy to include them in your travel plans according to your interests.
Plants, crafts and industrial history
At the Maison de la Flore, an exhibition displays freshly collected plants. They are identified and labelled with information about their family, genus and species; their habitat, conservation status and toxicity are also listed. This presents the plants’ botanical classification alongside their ecological characteristics. Other regional topics at the Maison de la Flore include activities related to water and forests, such as mills and sawmills, as well as industrial fields such as eyeglass and measuring-instrument production. The range of topics therefore extends from plants and their surroundings to various forms of craft and production.
The Maison du Mètre is devoted to the industrial heritage of the Haut-Jura and Longchaumois, particularly the manufacture of metal measuring rods. It reconstructs the last workshop in this line of production as it appeared in 1960, after a century of operation. The focus is therefore on both a specific product and its historical workshop setting. Those interested in the history of technology and crafts will find a different focus here than at the botanical exhibition in the Maison de la Flore.
Mountain biking and trails
The Bike Park de Longchaumois is free to access and has six trails for different ability levels. The skills area has steps, bridges and banked turns. It gives beginners the chance to practise mountain biking and build confidence. The six trails and the dedicated skills area offer several different ways to use the park, while an individual tour has a clearly defined route format.
The Tour de Longchaumois – 28B follows blue marker No. 28 and is an official route in the Geotrek network of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park. It is an easy 22.9-kilometre mountain bike loop. The distinction is useful when choosing an option: the Bike Park offers six trails for different ability levels, whereas the 28B is a named loop with a set distance and difficulty rating. You can therefore weigh up whether the park’s choice of trails or the described loop is a better fit for you.
On foot, the La Cascade de Pissevieille – 16N trail continues to the hamlet of Orcières, which is in the municipality of Longchaumois. This means that the local options include a walking trail with a named destination as well as cycling activities.
Seasonal activities and a taste of the region
The Rosset ski lift has a green run suitable for children and beginners. The offering is seasonal, and operating conditions may vary. So check whether the lift is operating at the time of your trip before visiting. The Ferme équestre de la Pelaisse offers activities for all ages and families; advance arrangements may be required.
At the exit from Longchaumois, the small shop at the Fruitière chaumerande offers Comté cheese for tasting at three stages of maturity: mild at eight months, fruity at 13 months and reserve at 18 months. These three stages offer a concrete insight into the cheese’s different ageing times. As product availability may vary, it is advisable to enquire before visiting.
