Mantry: Château, Saint-Germain Church and Mountain Biking Loop
Accommodation in Mantry
Mantry offers a range of focal points for planning a trip: architectural history and church architecture, as well as a challenging mountain biking loop and winegrowing. If you are looking for a hotel in Mantry, you can first consider whether historic buildings or the sporting route are more important for your stay. The Château, parish church, washhouse, route and winery each represent different aspects of the area. The following sections cover these topics in terms of architectural history, sporting challenge and winegrowing.
Château and historic protected areas
The Château on Route de Recanoz in Mantry was rebuilt around 1680 to 1690 and is privately owned. Since 6 May 2013, it has been partially protected as a Monument historique. The protection specifies individual components: the residential building with its stair tower is fully protected. For the two outbuildings, it covers the façades and roofs; it also includes the entrance portal with its double-leaf gate, the park and the perimeter wall. The date of rebuilding and the protection status describe two different aspects of the Château’s history.
Two construction phases of the Église paroissiale Saint-Germain
The Église paroissiale Saint-Germain can be understood in terms of two construction phases. Of the church built in 1612, the left chapel, the base of the bell tower with its chapel, and part of the left nave wall have survived. The foundation stone of the present-day Église paroissiale Saint-Germain was laid on 9 September 1772; it was consecrated on 11 September 1775. The dates refer to different events: 1772 to the laying of the foundation stone, and 1775 to the consecration. The surviving parts of the older church add specific architectural features to this chronology.
The washhouse in front of the town hall
Another building is the Lavoir de la mairie de Mantry, a large, curved washhouse. It was excavated and re-erected in 2018 in front of Mantry town hall. The year 2018 refers to its re-erection, not to the construction of the washhouse. Alongside the churches, the Lavoir is another example of Mantry’s local architectural history.
Mountain biking loop with elevation gain
For your sporting plans, Les quatre points de vue – 57R provides specific details. The 11 km mountain biking loop starts in the village of Mantry and is rated difficult. It includes 320 metres of ascent and the same amount of descent. The route follows wide paths and small roads, with views of the surrounding countryside along the way. The distance, elevation gain and rating describe different aspects of the ride: the kilometres indicate its length, the ascent and descent show the changes in elevation, and the difficulty provides an additional assessment. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.
Winegrowing and wines from the Jura
Winegrowing is another point of interest to consider when planning your trip. The Domaine Jean-Luc Mouillard winery now cultivates 11 hectares of vineyards in the Château-Chalon, L’Étoile and Côtes du Jura appellations. Its offerings include Château-Chalon as Vin jaune, as well as red and white wines from the Côtes du Jura appellation. The information distinguishes between the three appellations and the specific types of wine mentioned. If you are interested in Jura wines, winegrowing is another distinct focus alongside architectural history and mountain biking.
