Comus between the gorge and long-distance trails

Comus lies at the entrance to the Gorges de la Frau. The Tour du Boum circular hike starts in the mountain village; the long-distance trails Chemin des Bonshommes and Sentier Cathare also cross here. The Gorge de la Frau et Belesta Natura 2000 site covers the entire commune. This means that specific hiking trails meet in the village, alongside a natural area that encompasses the commune as a whole.

Circular hike and walk through the Gorges

The Tour du Boum is a 15-kilometre circular hike starting in Comus. It passes over the Pla du Boum and offers a viewpoint overlooking the Gorges de la Frau. The route type and viewpoint add two distinct details to the distance: one describes the hike as a loop, while the other identifies a specific view of the gorge.

Another hike follows an out-and-back route through the Gorges de la Frau to the commune of Comus and is 15.2 kilometres long. The ruins of the former hamlet of Basqui can be seen along the way. At 15 and 15.2 kilometres, the routes are similar in length; when choosing between them, the different route types and named waypoints are therefore especially useful. The Tour du Boum is a loop over the Pla du Boum with a viewpoint, while the other hike is described as an out-and-back route through the gorge to the visible ruins of Basqui. You can distinguish between the two trails by their routes and their landscape or historical features, rather than focusing only on the similar distances.

Long-distance trails with a history

The Chemin des Bonshommes (GR®107) and the Sentier Cathare cross in Comus. The Chemin des Bonshommes is a cross-border hiking trail between Ariège and Berguedà in Catalonia. From the 11th to the 16th century, it served as a trade route; the last Cathars used it to flee to Spain. The long-distance trail thus has both a regional connection and a long history of use. For travellers interested in a route’s history as well as specific waypoints, this background offers another way to discover Comus.

The Puivert–Comus section of the Sentier Cathare was modified in 2025 in the area around Espezel and Roquefeuil; trail markers and signs were updated accordingly. If you plan to include this section, check the current route before setting out.

The commune’s natural environment

The Gorge de la Frau et Belesta Natura 2000 site covers the entire commune of Comus. Rocky and forested landscapes shape this protected area, and its wildlife is also part of its natural character. Its extent differs from that of an individual route description: the Tour du Boum identifies a specific route and viewpoint, while the site encompasses the commune as a whole. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore consider both individual hiking destinations and the natural setting across the commune.
