Cruscades: Local history, trails and regional products

Cruscades brings together architectural history, an easy walk along the Orbieu, and regional wine and olive products. This offers several ways to shape your destination choice: in the town centre is the Church of Saint-Jean l'Évangéliste, while “Following the Orbieu” names a specific route for hiking enthusiasts. Château Étang des Colombes and La Cruscadine add wine and olive oil to the picture. Depending on your interests, you can make architectural history, hiking or local products the focus of your stay.

The Church of Saint-Jean l'Évangéliste

The Church of Saint-Jean l'Évangéliste is a historic building in the town centre of Cruscades. Its construction spanned the 11th to the 14th century, and it combines Romanesque and Gothic features. The timeframe and style offer two specific ways to appreciate the building: you can view it both in terms of its long construction period and the combination of the two architectural styles. Its location in the town centre also makes the church a clearly identifiable landmark in Cruscades.

Walk along the Orbieu and the Parcours VITA

The “Following the Orbieu” walk is easy and follows the Orbieu River in the shade of plane trees. It starts and ends in Cruscades. This makes both the riverside route and the walk’s connection to the town clear: the start and finish are both in Cruscades, and the Orbieu and the shade of the plane trees shape the experience along the way. This information will help you assess the character of the walk when planning your trip.

The Parcours VITA is signposted and marked with boards in Cruscades. The signs and boards provide orientation along the route; by contrast, “Following the Orbieu” is defined by the river route, the shade of the plane trees and its easy rating. Cruscades is also part of the Vallée de l'Orbieu Natura 2000 site. This is a separate connection to nature, in addition to the specific walk along the river.

Wine and winegrowing heritage

Château Étang des Colombes is set amid the Corbières vineyards and offers a wine tasting open to all Corbières wine lovers. The visitor offer also includes tours of the tasting room and the barrel cellar, as well as talks about the region’s winegrowing heritage. You can therefore consider the tasting and the tours as distinct highlights: the wine tasting on the one hand, and the rooms and talks about winegrowing on the other. Check in advance whether tours are available on your preferred date.

La Cruscadelle and olive oil from Cruscades

La Cruscadelle takes place at the end of July and is a festival promoting local products. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the exact dates in advance. Another regional product is La Cruscadine: this exceptional olive oil comes from Cruscades, in the heart of the Aude. La Cruscadine’s oils are made from the local Bouteillan and Olivière varieties. So, alongside the connection to wine at Château Étang des Colombes, you can also discover the specific olive varieties used in Cruscades.
