Accommodation in Cuxac-D'aude
Cuxac-d’Aude brings together church and local history, walking trails and a cycling link to Sallèles-d’Aude. When planning your trip, you can explore historic buildings, the Chemin de Mémoire, routes on foot or by bike, and the area's connection to wine.
Cultural history in churches and chapels
The church of Saint-Martin has been documented since 993. Its main building phases date from the 12th, 13th, 14th and 18th centuries. As a historic monument, the church is partly classified and partly listed. Its history of construction therefore spans several centuries.
The chapels also offer different historical perspectives. Notre-Dame de Magri was built in the 13th century and was associated with the Knights of Rhodes, later the Knights of Malta. The Chapel of the White Penitents was built at the end of the 16th century and served both religious and secular purposes. At Notre-Dame de Magri, the historical association with military orders shapes its background; the defining feature of the Chapel of the White Penitents is its dual purpose.
On Pech Carrétou in the Les Olivettes district are the restored 18th-century ice houses. The two chambers were used to store ice from Pic de Nore. The location, the chambers and the origin of the ice offer another, distinct way to explore the history of the commune.
The Chemin de Mémoire
The Chemin de Mémoire runs through the streets of the town and is intended for both local residents and tourists passing through. Its information panels are in French and Occitan. Photos or maps illustrate the individual sites; each panel also has a QR code that visitors can scan to access more detailed information. The route thus combines information at each stop with the option to find out more. If you are interested in local history, the route offers a focus of its own alongside the churches and chapels.
Walking and cycling
The Tour des Digues walking trail is 6.2 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 25 metres. When planning your walk, you can use its length and elevation difference as practical points of reference. There are four possible circular walking routes in Cuxac-d’Aude.
The Voie Verte connects Cuxac-d’Aude and Sallèles-d’Aude over 3.7 kilometres, running from Pont des Lavandières to the Gailhousty lock. When planning your trip, you can compare the walking trail and cycling link: the Tour des Digues gives its length and elevation difference, while the Voie Verte connects two towns.
Wine and local heritage
Chais Cuxac, on Rue de la Croix Blanche, offers a guided tasting of wines from its range. The Cuxac-d’Aude cooperative winery was founded in 1935 and is considered part of the commune’s heritage. The local connection to wine therefore offers both a hands-on experience for visitors and a link to the area's history.
