Espéraza: Hat Making, Dinosauria and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Espéraza
Espéraza offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: the Musée de la Chapellerie is dedicated to wool felt hat making, Dinosauria to dinosaurs and their contemporaries, and the Pont Vieux spans the Aude. There are also two routes with different destinations: one follows the river to the Bellevue dinosaur fossil site, while the other takes historic paths to Rennes-le-Château and viewpoints from the Tour Magdala.
Hat Making and Dinosauria
At the Musée de la Chapellerie d’Espéraza, the focus is on machines and various pieces of equipment used to make hats from wool felt. The displays cover the process from the felt hood to the finished hat. This lets you follow the manufacturing process through specific tools and production stages, rather than viewing only the finished product.
Two workshop areas explain both hat making and the effects of mechanical development since the Industrial Revolution. They link individual stages of the work to changes in production: alongside the tools, the technical development of the craft is also explored.
Dinosauria is the first museum in France devoted entirely to dinosaurs and their contemporaries. Its exhibition space covers more than 2,000 m² and explores the major geological eras. While the Musée de la Chapellerie presents a specific manufacturing process, Dinosauria places its subject in a broader time frame. Dinosauria has free parking and a bus stop directly outside the museum.
Pont Vieux and Historic Buildings
The Pont Vieux is listed in the supplementary register of historic monuments and spans the Aude with three arches. Historically, the bridge is described as having survived every flood and as the oldest bridge in the upper Aude valley after the bridge at Alet. The church in Espéraza is also listed in the register of historic monuments.
Two Routes, Each with Its Own Focus
The Sentier des Dinosaures is an easy 8 km route that starts and ends in Espéraza. It first follows the River Aude, then continues to the Bellevue dinosaur fossil site. The route has 15 themed information panels, linking the course of the river to a specific fossil site. The easy rating describes the level of difficulty; the 8 km refers separately to the route’s length.
The Sentier de Couleurs follows historic paths to Rennes-le-Château. From the Tour Magdala, it offers views of the valley and the small canyon of the Couleurs stream. When choosing between the routes, your preferred theme may be the deciding factor: the river and dinosaur fossil site on one route, historic paths and viewpoints on the other.
