Discover Fitou: Wine, Heritage and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Fitou
Fitou brings together wine country, heritage and walking trails amid varied landscapes. From Fitou, you can enjoy views of the Étang de Leucate. Vineyards, dry-stone walls, capitelles, a mineral character and garrigue shape the landscape around the village. Historic buildings add another dimension: alongside the Ruines du château are a church first mentioned in 1065 and a chapel built in the last quarter of the 19th century. Two moderate hikes can be compared by length, starting-point description and scenery.
Heritage in Fitou
The Ruines du château in Fitou have been referred to as a “castrum” since 1271. The structure was quadrangular; two sides remain, and the walls were fitted with a row of loopholes. The surviving sides still show the layout, while the loopholes also reveal the structure’s defensive character.
The Église Saint Julien & Sainte Basilisse is also mentioned as far back as 1065. The original building has a semicircular apse with a half-dome.
The Chapelle Saint Joseph adds a more recent building to the village’s history. Abbé Hugonet built the deconsecrated chapel in the last quarter of the 19th century on the site of an earlier chapel called Saint Roch. It is currently used as a venue for exhibitions and concerts; as the programme may change, it is advisable to check the latest dates before visiting.
The capitelles also tell a story of practical use: they served as agro-pastoral shelters, and 250 have been recorded in the commune. The vernacular heritage of the capitelles is being restored and consolidated by the association “Les Capitelles Al Vent”.
Walking between garrigue and wetlands
The “De la Garrigue au Vignoble” trail is 7.2 km long and starts and ends in Fitou. It passes through vineyards and garrigue, with views of Fitou village and the étangs. Le Pla de Ventenac is a 7.0 km moderate circular walk. It starts at the Col du Pré car park above Fitou village.
Both trails are moderate and differ in length by only 0.2 km, so the landscapes described and the starting points are the main factors to consider when choosing between them. While the first trail links vineyards and garrigue, Le Pla de Ventenac passes through an area on the edge of the wetland in the Salses / Leucate lagoon complex. The Pla area is also home to Les Gourgues, a flooded former gypsum quarry that has gradually been colonised by moisture-loving fauna and flora. Here, a former intervention in the landscape has given way to the later development of a moisture-rich habitat. Check local trail conditions before setting out; parking availability may also change.
Wine and regional produce
At the Caveau de Fitou, you can taste AOP Fitou wines and other regional wines. Local products such as olive oil, honey, pâtés and tapenades are also available. As the selection may change, check the current offerings before travelling. A visit to the wine cellar adds a distinctive culinary dimension to the historic and scenic attractions.
