Fontcouverte lies at the foot of a hill in the Alaric wine-growing region. Local highlights range from the Fontcalel spring and a circular trail to the Romanesque church, the heritage associated with Saint-Régis and a wine tasting at Domaine de Mingraut. To help plan your visit, it is useful to distinguish between a specific hiking route, religious and architectural landmarks, and a wine-related activity. Fontcouverte offers a separate point of interest for each of these themes.

Fontcalel Spring and the Autour de la Peyrouse Circular Trail

Fontcalel is a spring at the foot of a rocky escarpment between two geological faults. Its water maintains a constant temperature of 18 °C in both summer and winter. The Autour de la Peyrouse circular trail passes Fontcalel before climbing to a pine forest. At Le Trote-Cos, the trail reaches a viewpoint overlooking the plain and Fabrezan. Autour de la Peyrouse is a 5.9-kilometre circular hiking trail. Its length and viewpoint provide practical details for planning the walk; check trail conditions and markings before setting out, as they can change.

Church, Fountain and Saint-Régis

The Église Saint-Julien-Sainte-Basilisse is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. The Fontaine de la Place dates from the late 19th century. Its 4.40-metre-high column supports a cast-iron statue symbolising agriculture. The contrast in age is clear: the church represents 12th-century Romanesque architecture, while the Fontaine de la Place dates from the late 19th century and features an agricultural motif.

The birthplace of Saint François Régis in Fontcouverte is now a chapel. The publicly displayed Saint-Régis monument commemorates local devotion to the village’s patron saint; its statue dates from the 19th century. The pilgrimage to Saint-Régis on 16 June draws people from across the region. The arrangements may vary from year to year. If you plan to attend, check the arrangements for that year. The site “La fontaine couverte et ses abords” is also designated as a protected site in Fontcouverte.

Wine Tasting and Cellar

Domaine de Mingraut offers a guided wine tasting and a tour of the adjoining cellar. The two activities have different focuses: the wine tasting centres on sampling the wines with commentary, while the tour focuses on the cellar. Visitor offerings may change; check the current arrangements before travelling.

The planning considerations differ depending on what you choose: the trail’s length and viewpoint provide a practical framework, while the pilgrimage takes place on 16 June. Check the arrangements for a visit to the winery in advance. This lets you compare a walk, a fixed date and a winery visit that needs to be arranged according to their different time requirements.
